  • Cliffhanger: The gang heads to the hospital where Carol is about to give birth.
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": While talking to Rachel, Ross's pager goes off, and he casually remarks he's about to become a father. It takes Rachel reacting to this for it to dawn on Ross.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The reason Phoebe needed the secretary job. She ran a workshop on DIY massaging which ends up meaning clientele don't need her anymore.
  • Ditzy Secretary: Phoebe as Chandler's receptionist.
  • Erotic Dream: Ross is jealous after Rachel dreams about sex with Chandler, and then sex with both Chandler and Joey, and then just Chandler and Joey without her. When she finally dreams about him, he dances on a table with joy.
  • From Bad to Worse: Monica is, of course, squicked out when she learns how old Ethan actually is. Him not getting her reference to Joan Collins just makes the age gap seem even bigger to her.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: When Ethan comes into the coffee shop to talk to Monica, Rachel brings Joey and Ross to the bathroom to "check out the new hand dryers." When they return, they can see that Monica is still talking, so Rachel remarks, "Say, are your hands still wet?" Joey and Ross agree and they head back out.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Chandler trying to deny that he talks in a certain way.
Chandler: That is so NOT true. (Phoebe, Ross and Joey laugh) That is so NOT... That is so NO... That... Oh, shut up!
  • Inelegant Blubbering: A joyful Monica over learning that her nephew will soon be born.
  • Inherently Attractive Profession: Ross is incredulous that Rachel is touching up her make-up before they leave for the hospital. She retorts that doctors will be there.
  • Moment Killer: When Rachel wakes up from her sex dream about Ross, it looks like they're about to finally do some talking, but then Ross's pager goes off and alerts him to the big news.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • Ross is ecstatic over learning his son will soon be born, but then he trips over the sofa while trying to get to the phone.
    • During the end credits, Ross is hustling everyone out to the hospital and annoyed over their various time-delaying antics. However, once by himself, he takes a moment to think about how he'll soon be a father and gets lost in thought. The other friends have to then hustle him down to the cab.
  • Not So Above It All: When Chandler stumbles onto a few of his co-workers making fun of them, he gives them some material for the others, but he also makes it clear to Phoebe who will be working this weekend.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: While freaking out about how young Ethan is Monica compares herself to Joan Collins. Ethan has no idea who Joan Collins is.
  • Shout-Out: One of the ways the guys tease Monica about Ethan is by suggesting that she ask him which is the strongest Power Ranger.
    Ross: IT'S MORPHIN' TIME!
    Joey: STEGOSAURUS!
    Chandler: TYRANNOSAURUS!
  • The Social Expert: Phoebe is able to perfectly navigate the social dynamics of Chandler's workplace on her first day and assures Chandler that their mocking of him has nothing to do with his character.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Phoebe telling Chandler that his co-workers' dislike of him is Nothing Personal and that they do view him as a Benevolent Boss.

  • We Used to Be Friends: Chandler can't believe his subordinates dislike him, saying they were his friends a month ago before his promotion.
  • Wham Line: "Now, I'm having a baby."
  • Younger Than They Look: Subverted.
    • Monica thinks Ethan looks young for a college senior. Then he tells her he's actually a high school senior.
    • Monica herself thinks she can pass for 22. Her friends are more skeptical.
      Monica: Oh, I can't pass for 22?
      Phoebe: Well, maybe 25-26.
      Monica: I am 26!
      Phoebe: There you go.
