"I wonder if anyone else sleeps here?"
Gobo receives news that his uncle, Traveling Matt, is coming back. The Fraggles immediately begin preparing a celebration. In response to Red's snide remarks, Gobo claims the two of them will find the Crystal Cavern. Matt arrives home, and the next day, Gobo, Matt, and Wembley set out for the Crystal Cavern. Gobo and Matt come to blows when they question each other about their skills. Upset, Wembley leaves, stumbling upon the Crystal Cavern. They bring back a crystal for Red. Matt, realizing he's happier in Outer Space, sets out on his travels again.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Accidental Discovery: Wembley finding the Crystal Cavern.
  • Broken Pedestal: Gobo and Matt become this to Wembley after the former two start fighting.
  • Cartoon Conductor: Gillis conducts a group of Fraggles singing "The Whoopee Cantata (aka "Welcome Back, Uncle Matt"). Some of them sing it while bouncing on pogo sticks.
  • Character Action Title: The episode's title.
  • Continuity Nod: Among the creatures singing "The Whoopee Cantata (aka "Welcome Back, Uncle Matt") are rock creatures identical to the one that snarled at Wembley in "The Terrible Tunnel."
  • Corporal Punishment: When Gobo and Matt start arguing, Matt tells Gobo he'll do this.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Matt decides to use a Rock Clinger to find the Crystal Cavern, believing the Rock Clingers live there, much to Wembley's amazement and Gobo's disgust. It's revealed he's right.
  • Disapproving Look: Gillis gives Gobo one when he interrupts "The Whoopee Cantata" to tell him that Matt has an announcement.
  • Faceplanting into Food: For Matt's "welcome home" party, a radish-meringue cake has been baked, complete with a statue of him at the top. Matt ruins the cake when he trips, landing face-first in it.
  • Forgot to Mind Their Head: This time, it's Matt who bumps his head on the pipe.
Uncle Matt: Oh, careful of your head here, Gobo. [Bumps his head on the pipe.] Ooh!
  • Home Sweet Home: Subverted. Matt writes that he's tired of exploring Outer Space and is coming back to stay. At the end, he realizes he's happier in Outer Space.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Gobo scolds Wembley and Red for eating part of the statue—seconds after he's tasted it himself.
Gobo: Wembley! Red! How could you eat the Uncle Matt statue from the radish-meringue cake?
Wembley: [chuckling] I can see we weren't alone!
Red: Oh, yeah! I see some radish frosting on your upper lip, Gobo.
Gobo: Oh... uh... [He quickly wipes it off.]
  • No Peripheral Vision: When Matt knocks on the door, Doc answers but doesn't see him. Matt's lower than Doc would have been looking, but Doc still should have noticed him.
  • Pets as a Present: To Gobo's horror, Matt, when leaving, gives him a Rock Clinger.
  • Rule of Pool: When Red insults Uncle Matt, Gobo pushes her into the swimming pool—and falls in himself.
  • Sickeningly Sweet: The Rock Clingers. They have a tendency to fall in love with Fraggles and never leave them alone.
  • Ska: The Whoopee Cantata (aka "Welcome Back, Uncle Matt") has a Ska beat. Matt hates the song.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Sandwich: Or cake, thanks to Matt faceplanting into it.
