Trying to regroup after the Raven Nation disaster, Cade and Eddie are ambushed and taken prisoner by the Gua. Eddie is tortured for information, while Cade goes through something much stranger.
Tropes:
- And I Must Scream: Mabus taunts Cade that Jordan is suffering in her possessed state. Holding Jordan's hand in a fire, Mabus says that while the pain doesn't bother him, Jordan can feel everything.Mabus: She feels this, deep inside. She's screaming, Foster. Can you hear her?
- Big Damn Heroes: First Joshua rescues Eddie from being burned alive, then both of them go rescue Cade moments before Mabus can electrocute him to death.
- Bittersweet Ending: Cade and Eddie have had a really rough time, but they've discovered a new set of Nostradamus prophecies out of the ordeal. However, there aren't many prophecies, which suggests there isn't a lot of time left before the Second Wave.
- Electric Torture: Mabus can apparently electrocute people by touch, as Cade is distressed to find out.
- Exact Words: When Cade sees the damage that Mabus' presence is wreaking on Jordan's body.Mabus: Jordan's body will have to last until I find a vessel that's strong enough.
Cade: Where d'you plan on finding one of those?
Mabus: I'm working on it as we speak. - Eye Scream: After being tortured, Eddie is bleeding from the eye.
- Fighting from the Inside: Mabus says that Jordan is still resisting.Mabus: You know she's still inside? She's put up walls to keep me out. To stop me from stealing her thoughts and memories. But those walls are cracking.
- For the Evulz: Sagon gleefully tortures Eddie for his passwords and the Nostradamus books, then comes close to burning him alive.
- Gaslighting: The whole point of kidnapping Cade is to screw with his sense of reality so he impregnates Jordan while believing she's a hallucination.
- Hand on Womb: Mabus uses this gesture in telling Cade they've conceived the perfect vessel.
- Love Is a Weakness: Mabus tells Cade that his feelings for Jordan are a weakness that will ensure his defeat.
- Mind Rape:
- Mabus uses Psychic Powers to torture Cade with visions of the invasion of Earth.
- Mabus' White Void Room affects humans mentally, by forcing them to relive their worst regrets. After a few minutes, Cade is too discombobulated to realise the Jordan he's seeing is real.
- Questionable Consent: A really weird version where both parties are being raped by a third, via Gaslighting and Demonic Possession.
- Skyward Scream: Jordan, in the final scene, as Mabus retakes control.
- Stalker with a Test Tube: Mabus' aim is to trick Cade into sleeping with possessed!Jordan in order to conceive a child that will eventually be Mabus' ideal host.
- Stripperiffic: Mabus' favoured look in Jordan's body.
- Torture for Fun and Information: Both our heroes go through this, but Eddie especially. Sagon seems to revel in piercing Eddie's skin with needles made of an alien metal that apparently messes with the human nervous system in a way that really hurts. It breaks Eddie in seconds.
- Wham Shot: An in-universe version when Joshua finally sees the real Nostradamus book. The All-Seeing Eye symbol on the cover comes from an alien society the Gua conquered centuries earlier... as does the early Aramaic the Omega Quatrains are written in.
- You Have Failed Me: Cade is taunted with visions in Mabus' White Void Room of Eddie (who he's been told is dead) and Joshua calling him a failure. He's in no shape to resist a sympathetic Jordan when she appears.
