Recap / Family Guy S 20 E 6 Cootie And The Blowhard

Go To

Stewie takes drastic measures when he thinks he is diagnosed with terminal "cooties." Meanwhile, Peter becomes infatuated with Bonnie's cooking.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: During the press conference wrap-up, a reporter asks an irritated Peter why the show went from its long-held timeslot of 9:00 to 9:30. The reporter is voiced by H. Jon Benjamin, star of the show that got the 9:00 timeslot in the scheduling change.
  • Ageless Birthday Episode: Averted. Brian turns ten years old, while he was previously mentioned to be eight throughout the series.
  • An Aesop: Appreciate the time you have left to live.
  • Brick Joke: At the birthday party, Peter makes several jokes about Brian's small penis size. Later, in his goodbye message, Stewie tells Brian that he's left a penis enlarging machine for him in the closet, but all he's really left is a note making fun of Brian again.
Ha ha, you wanted it 'cause you need it.
  • Comical Overreacting: Peter does this when Lois reveals that she knew that Peter was eating at Bonnie's.
  • Confidentiality Betrayal: Peter starts off Brian's birthday roast by roasting him about his supposed erectile dysfunction, Brian not only refutes it but upon realizing who the jokes were intended for, asks Peter if this is related to Peter's inability to perform on their anniversary. Peter snaps back, "I told you that in confidence!"
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • Peter not being able to enjoy Lois' cooking is presented as a blatant parallel to erectile dysfunction, with Meg even suggesting he "try it from the back" before Peter gives up and calls the meal a "non-starter". Eating Bonnie's cooking behind Lois' back, while Bonnie's own husband is absent, is treated as an extra-marital affair.
    • Stewie being "diagnosed" with cooties, freaking out over it, and having to "get his affairs in order" while he still can plays out like somebody discovering they have a terminal illness.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: The subplot is a rare pairing of Peter and Bonnie. During the press conference, Peter is asked if this dynamic will appear in later episodes, and he says they'll have to see how it played out in footage.
  • Incest Subtext: Played for Laughs. At separate points, Chris hits on Lois and Meg due to lack of masturbation.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: Done twice by Peter when Lois and later Stewie try to sing a melancholy ballad, but he comes in and says that they cannot afford these songs. He then replaces the song with Black Betty while he dances and sings.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Brian has this reaction when Stewie runs away to commit suicide in Vermont upon him reading Stewie the Riot Act for his newfound cootie obsession.
  • Series Continuity Error: Peter claims that he and their friends went to Joe's wedding. Joe and Bonnie were already married when they moved to the neighborhood in their first appearance.
  • Stealth Insult: Peter is surprised when Bonnie tells him dinner is ready, as he's always used to hearing a "ding!" sound when Lois cooks. Bonnie casually remarks that she cooks her food in the oven, not the microwave.
  • Stepford Smiler: Implied. Though Lois approves of Peter eating with Bonnie from now on, she goes into the other room to sing a sad song and cry by herself about it. Until Peter ruins the moment.
  • Take That!: Brian talks about how nobody knows what the future will hold and gives an all-too-real example.
