Recap / Family Guy S 19 E 3 Boys And Squirrels

Go To

When his obsession with a chainsaw sends him to the doctor, Peter is restored to his true height. Meanwhile, Chris and Stewie raise an injured squirrel that lived in a tree he cut down.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: After Peter becomes taller he still wears his old pants because he doesn't know his new pant size and expects to find out at Christmas. The end of the episode skips forward to Christmas and Peter can be heard celebrating getting new pants.
  • Chainsaw Good: The first act of the episode has Peter acquire a chainsaw and use it for his wacky shenanigans.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Brian's personal hatred of squirrels aside, what did Stewie and Chris reasonably think would happen to their squirrel when they live with A DOG? Of course Brian was going to maul it to death the moment it got out of their reach
  • Dogs Hate Squirrels: Played for Drama and Horror. Brian killing the squirrel is both horrific and heart-breaking.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: For all their blaming of who caused the squirrel's death? Chris has the most valid point against Stewie for forgetting they live with Brian, considering he and Stewie are so close and all.
  • Furry Reminder: Brian is a dog and dogs do chase and attack/kill squirrels in real life.
  • Height Angst: A chiropractic mishap renders Peter his "true height" which is much taller than he usually is. After the novelty wears off and the downsides become apparent, Peter misses his old height.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: When Peter is mistaken for the Slender Man, he tells people to kill themselves while claiming it's "just a goof".
  • Karma Houdini: Combined with Guilt by Association, Stewie gets blamed for Brian's actions involving the squirrel's death by Chris due to "being his best friend". As a result, Brian himself gets away with tearing apart the squirrel, since for some reason Chris and Stewie don’t bother seeking revenge on him.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Lois mentions that Peter's lenses have been smudged for 19 years. This episode is from the 19th season of the show.
  • Mood Whiplash: The end of the episode skips to Christmas, where Stewie checks the mail and finds the Christmas card with the squirrel he made with Chris. Stewie breaks down, and then Peter can be heard celebrating the fact that he got pants from the house.
  • Popcultural Osmosis Failure: Peter thought Pink Floyd was just one guy until Lois told him otherwise.
Lois: Pink Floyd is multiple guys!
    Peter: He is?!
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Invoked. In order to help Peter return to his normal height after being endlessly bullied, Lois belittles and berates him in the most brutal way possible, with her listing every negative thing about Peter she can think ofnote  and mocking it to the point Peter would constantly cringe after every sentence. By the time she's finished, Peter is barely an inch tall.
Lois: For starters, you're a failure.
Peter: Oof! (he then cringes and shrinks by an inch.)
Lois: You didn't go to college, daddy pays our mortgage, and you're a terrible husband and a father.
    Peter: Ow! (Shrinks)
Lois: Your whole life is a pattern of hatable noises.
    Peter: Ooh! (Shrinks)
Lois: The way you chew a banana makes it sound like it's filled with bones.
Peter: (more shrinking and cracking) Ouch!
Lois: I loathe the little wheeze at the crest of every breath you take.
Peter: (more shrinking and cracking) Yikes!
Lois: I hate the one story you tell at every cocktail party about almost meeting John Kerry.
    Peter: That's a good story.
Lois: You didn't even meet him!
Peter: (more shrinking and cracking) ...Almost.
Lois: Your eyeglass lenses have been smudged for 19 years.
Peter: (more shrinking and cracking) Aw, crap.
Lois: Everyone hates it when you see fireworks and you announce, "This is the finale!"
Peter: (more shrinking and cracking) Please stop.
Lois: Pink Floyd is multiple guys!
    Peter: He is?
Lois: You're so predictable. I know every word that's gonna come out of your mouth before you even say it.
Both: Balderdash. Heavens. Stop that. I worked for Purolator Courier before they went bankrupt.
Lois: (continuing as Peter also continues to shrink to the sounds of cracking bones) Appearance. (blowing long raspberry with her thumbs down) Intelligence. (blowing raspberry with her thumbs down) Penis size. (blowing long raspberry) And another thing...!
  • Shameful Shrinking: To restore Peter back to normal, Lois reveals that wives can berate so effectively it literally shrinks their husbands. When she does this for Peter she gets into it so much that she ends up shrinking him small enough to rest on a pillow.
  • Shout-Out: After being resorted to his true height, Peter is inexplicably mistaken for Slenderman.
  • Social Media Is Bad: Discussed; Chris blames Stewie's obsession with social media for the death of their pet squirrel.
I'm not the one who just had to post a video to Instagram that very second. You couldn't even enjoy the moment for one damn minute before desperately grovelling for online approval from Aunts you never talk to and past coworkers you don't even like!
  • Tragic Keepsake: At the end of the episode, after so much turmoil coping with the squirrel's death, Stewie finds the Christmas card he and Chris made with it in the mail and breaks down.
  • The Voiceless: Despite killing the squirrel, Brian has no speaking lines. In fact, it's his only scene in the episode.
