Recap / F Is For Family S 4 E 4 The B Word

Go To

While Big Bill tries to take Bill to hockey tryouts, Bill soon sees his grandfather for what he is. Frank struggles to bond with his father-in-law Stan and uses his neighbors as buffers. Sue is hit with a surprise baby shower, mistakenly thinking that Vivian is interested in restarting their business to sell home inventions.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Stan had an abusive father, as he disapproved of Stan's relationship with girl named Sophie to the point where he used his position as a cop to frame her for a crime which caused her father to accidentally murder her in a fit of rage.
    • After Frank and his friends argue over whether Frank or Stan had the worse father, Otto Holtenwasser, who has been silent until this point, abruptly speaks up: "My father turned me in to the Gestapo." This shocks everybody into complete silence, after which Goomer uncomfortably says, "Yeah, that's the winner."
    • Babe reveals that when he got a tattoo while serving in the Navy, his father cut it off of his chest with a knife. After hearing stories from his friends about their abusive childhoods as well as his own, Babe returns home in tears promising to be a better father... until he sees the mess left in his house by Philip and Anthony fighting, and yells at Philip for not "being a man" and minding his brother better.
Philip: I don't want to be a man! That was your mistake!
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Ben Schrider finds the fact that Bill framed Jimmy for the hockey stick theft to be utterly amusing.
  • Cliffhanger: Upset over her ambivalence over her pregnancy, made worse by seeing her old college girlfriend become a successful lawyer, Sue isn't paying attention when she is driving home from the baby shower, and is distracted when a gust of air blows the papers for her Forkoontula throughout the cabin of the car. She hits a large tree. The episode ends with an unconscious Sue with her head lying on the horn, causing it to blare continuously.
  • History Repeats: Big Bill nearly hits Bill for knocking over a display of baseball bats and tells them to "Pick them up before I drop you down that *** well," just like he said to Frank when he was a kid for accidentally spilled grape-juice on the kitchen table of his childhood home.
  • Irony: After being shown only in flashbacks as Sue's unattractive college roommate who is jealous of her relationship with Frank, Gertrude attends Sue's baby shower as a wealthy, prestigious attorney who has appeared on Sixty Minutes and insinuates that she had an affair with Henry Kissinger. This makes Sue feel bad that she dropped out of college to live in a paycheck-to-paycheck household with a fourth unwanted pregnancy.
  • Internal Reveal: Ben Schrider finally learns who Bill really is and that he framed Jimmy for stealing the hockey stick.
    • As a bonus, Bill sees his paternal granddad's abusiveness after accidentally knocking over a display of baseball bats.
  • Racist Grandma: When Gertrude talks about meeting Mike Wallace, Nana Rose makes a devil horn gesture and pointedly calls him "Myron". note
  • The Swear Jar: The ladies at Sue's baby shower hold a little contest of putting clothespins in glass bottles whenever they say 'baby' and whoever gets the least amount wins. Sue, despite being the one pregnant, manages to come out the victor.
