The obelisk agrees to bring back more humans, so Feena travels to the lake to find them.

Teaser

Flashback: Over Ezra’s objections, Lynn packs up to head to an abandoned urgent care facility a few miles away to find the supplies she needs to treat Ezra. She leaves Silas behind to care for him and Kylie.

In the present, while the others sleep, Feena heads for the Obelisk, but encounters Red Drone along the way. Unable to get rid of it, she asks again to talk to Duncan, but Red Drone refuses. She’s surprised to find Ezra sitting in front of the Obelisk, who overheard her conversation with Red Drone. She explains that Duncan was special to her, and that the message from the Obelisk had said they would be granted more people in exchange for the weapon, so they might as well be people they care about. Ezra agrees, but points out that they don’t know how to ask for the people they want. Feena notices the weapon open, and both confirm that neither of them opened it, and they don’t believe Abram would have without telling them.

In a nearby lake, the Sparks are weaving the body of another human: Lynn.

Act 1

A young girl watches from a tree as a Skin Rider starts taking a rabbit from a snare. She uses a sling to hurl a rock at him, knocking him out, then takes the rabbit.

Abram has found herbs that he’s put in the plant soup. He attempts to reassure Feena that the herbs are safe because the Obelisk would have warned him otherwise, and that he ate some and is fine. Feena’s not as confident, but she eats some and admits the flavor is not as bad. They both hope that Ezra is having luck hunting. Unfortunately, he’s not: we see him shoot at and miss a deer.

The Skin Rider attacked by the girl reports to Silas that he didn’t see his attacker. Silas points out that they didn’t set the snare, and if someone was trying to take his prey he’d hit them with a rock too. Jax says the woods are theirs and anyone hunting in them is a thief. Silas tells him to take Duncan (whose Companion has apparently recovered) and find the thief. Jax is concerned about the weapon Ezra uncovered, and Silas says they will find it and destroy it.

Feena and Abram discuss the weapon. Feena speculates that it was buried by time like the cars in the desert, leading Abram to wonder if it is a remnant of the Karik invasion. Suddenly a bunch of glyphs appear on the Obelisk, most of them unfamiliar to Abram at first. He eventually determines that it says that Feena is to go to the lake alone to receive more people, but Red Drone won't tell them who. Feena asks Abram to try to find out more about the weapon as she leaves for the lake.

Jax and Duncan, leading a band of Skin Riders, discover the tracks and meal remains of the young girl, and then see Feena following the still silent Red Drone. The Skin Riders begin to stalk Feena, unaware that the young girl is in turn following them.

Yellow Drone tells Abram he can remove the weapon’s lid. He does so, revealing a small object with strange carvings and glowing red parts. Yellow Drone explains how the weapon works. The Skin Rider parasite has a crystalline brain that glows when it’s thinking. The weapon is able to destroy these crystals, but its purpose is not to target individual Skin Riders, but rather the Ancestor, a repository of these crystals containing the memories of the entire Skin Rider population. Whenever a Skin Rider dies, their crystal is added to the Ancestor to preserve their knowledge. Its location is unknown, but Yellow Drone says the Reborns must find and destroy it. Meanwhile, Feena and Red Drone arrive at the lake.

Ezra returns from hunting, having had no success. When he learns that Feena has gone out alone, he is upset and demands that Yellow Drone lower the force field so he can go find her. It responds that the Obelisk controls the force field, and Abram says he has no way to tell whoever is on the other end to lower it. Yellow Drone insists that Feena is capable; otherwise, the Obelisk would not have sent her. Ezra bristles at being stuck inside the force field, but ultimately, there is nothing he can do.

Lynn’s body surfaces on the lake, and Red Drone restores her memories. In a flashback, she recalls entering an abandoned urgent care facility, looking for medication for supplies to help Ezra, when she is startled by the loud alien buzz. She awakes in the lake in a panic, and Feena throws her a rope and pulls her to shore. She’s surprised to recognize Lynn, who is almost immediately darted by Red Drone. She tells Lynn that Ezra will fill her in. Lynn doesn’t remember Feena, meaning that her brain state doesn’t include memories made by her hologram. Feena introduces herself as a friend, only for the two of them to be interrupted by Jax.

Act 2

Jax demands that Feena hand over the Sparks. Lynn remarks that she knows Jax, but he’s quickly darted by Red Drone and collapses. Red Drone tells them to hurry back to the settlement. Feena asks about the others, but Red Drone says the Sparks won’t make them right now and urges them to hurry. As they flee, Red Drone is suddenly knocked down and captured by Duncan. The women run up, and Feena is initially pleased to see Duncan alive, only to be zapped by him. He tries to grab Lynn, but Feena hits him with a stick and they run away. However, Lynn has injured her feet and tells Feena to leave her so they aren’t both captured. She objects, but Lynn refuses to go with her, telling her to go get Ezra and he’ll come for her. Feena reluctantly complies.

Duncan and the other Skin Riders bring Lynn back to Jax, who tells them to find Feena. Jax offers her a blanket and water, which she hesitantly accepts. When questioned, he explains to her about the Sparks. She is skeptical, but he tells her to check for scars or birthmarks; she doesn’t have them because she has a brand new body. He reveals that his human remembers who Lynn is, and that it is now 400 years after the invasion.

Flashback: Lynn hides in the urgent care center from the battle raging outside. Several soldiers retreat into the building but are hit by an alien weapon blast. Lynn goes to examine them, and finds only one alive, feebly asking for help. She turns him over, and we see that it’s Jax. She drags him into a supply closet and closes the door, hiding from an unseen Karik in the hallway.

In the present, Jax tells Lynn to put her injured feet in the water, and the Sparks come and heal her. Jax captures some and drinks them. Wanting to collect more, Jax hands her a knife and demands that she cut her foot again to attract them, or he will do it to her instead.

Abram ascends the watchtower, where Ezra scours the land with binoculars. Ezra thinks Abram puts too much trust in the Obelisk, but Abram tells him that if they disobey, there are consequences, and that whatever he might not know about them, what he does know is that restoring the human race is what’s most important, and so he’s on their side. Meanwhile, Feena continues fleeing, pursued by the other Skin Riders, but manages to evade them.

Jax is suddenly knocked out by a projectile, and Lynn turns to see the young girl.

Act 3

Without a word, the girl turns and runs, and Lynn grabs Jax’s knife and follows her. After leading her some distance away, the girl indicates a piece of cloth and motions for Lynn to wear it as a blindfold. She resists, but the girl’s spear convinces her. With the blindfold in place, the girl smiles, takes her hand, and leads her to a rude shelter cobbled together from scavenged supplies. There, she provides Lynn with moccasins and clothes–somehow in her size–and jerky to eat. Lynn tries to ask her about her family, her name, and whether she knows Ezra, but the girl simply continues smiling and eating, clearly not understanding or able to speak. Meanwhile, Jax awakes and gets up.

Ezra sees Feena running toward the settlement. They meet her outside the gate as she passes through the force field, and tells Ezra that the Skin Riders captured Lynn. Ezra demands to be let out to go find Lynn, but the force field remains up, and Yellow Drone says there is nothing they can do to help her. He heads inside and grabs the sledgehammer, intending to destroy the Obelisk so the force field will drop. Abram stops him, saying that the Obelisk is simply protecting him from needlessly getting killed or taken, and Yellow Drone says it’ll dart him rather than allow him to damage the Obelisk. Ezra puts down the sledgehammer, and begins to search for another way out.

As Lynn talks to the girl, she suddenly covers Lynn’s mouth, hearing Jax nearby. He discovers the girl’s shelter, but she and Lynn have fled down the stream. They hear his screams of frustration, and Lynn recalls Jax regaining consciousness in the supply closet. She brings him up to speed, explaining that they can’t leave because there’s a Karik ship parked outside. She tells him she has to remove the shrapnel from his leg or he will lose it. He agrees, and she prepares to draw some of her own blood to replace what Jax has lost, as any blood in the clinic can’t be used because they don’t know how long the power has been out.

Lynn and the girl stop to rest. It begins to rain. The girl capers with delight, then suddenly collapses, seizing.

Act 4

Duncan and the other Skin Riders catch up with Jax. As Duncan explains that they lost their quarry, Jax punches him. Duncan prepares to fight back, but Silas arrives and stops them. Duncan hands Silas a bag with Red Drone inside, saying it will require repairs. Silas advises everyone to get out of the rain, but Jax refuses, saying he must fulfill his objective. Silas warns him that, judging from his head wound, Jax is not the only predator in the woods.

Ezra has determined that the force field is a sphere with the Obelisk at the center; there is no way out as long as the field is up. Feena blames herself: she didn’t want to wait for Ezra because she thought that they wouldn’t give her Duncan if she delayed, and reveals that she found out that Duncan’s a Skin Rider, and now Lynn will be, too. Ezra refuses to blame her, saying it’s never a good idea to defy Lynn. They commit to help each other get back the ones they care about.

Cradling the girl in her arms, Lynn remembers Jax coming around after she had removed the shrapnel from his leg. She tells Jax about Ezra, and Jax tells her that he got married nine days ago, just before the invasion. He tells her to stay close to her family and enjoy being with them as long as she can.

Abram stands before the Obelisk, trying to figure out how to talk to it. He frustratedly asks why they brought the humans back if they won’t allow them to do what they need to do. He draws the “community” glyph on the Obelisk and asks if they value it. The same glyph appears on the Obelisk in return. Abram says they can’t abandon Lynn and draws the “mercy” glyph, asking them to have mercy on Ezra and his wife. The same glyph appears in response. Ezra doesn’t know if that means he’s been heard, or if it is just repeating the glyphs.

The girl wakes up in Lynn’s arms just in time to see Jax standing over them.

Act 5

Jax tells Lynn that the girl is a reject, an incorrectly-woven Reborn. He says that the humans are nothing but tools to the Obelisk and the “Makers,” and won’t bring back those that die, no matter how important they are to the humans. The emotion in his voice indicates he’s talking about his wife. Lynn offers to give him Sparks if he lets the girl go. He responds that he can catch them both anyway, but Lynn pulls out the knife and says she won’t make it easy. He relents, and Lynn gives the knife to the girl and tells her to run. Jax says Lynn just lost her negotiating tool, and Lynn retorts that he lost the ability to cut her feet. He tells her to follow him, and they’ll leave the Sparks for now.

Flashback: Lynn and Jax awake in the closet to noises outside. Jax cautiously opens the door to investigate, and finds more soldiers: they are saved. Lynn is reunited with Ezra at the cabin, telling him that she got what they needed.

In the present, Lynn and Jax arrive at the Skin Rider camp, where they hold a funeral for the one who was killed by the weapon. Lynn is shocked to recognize Silas leading the ceremony. He takes out a knife and removes the crystal from the dead Skin Rider, and instructs that it be taken to the Ancestor. He then greets Lynn by name.

Abram is having success communicating with the Obelisk. He looks for a notebook to write down what he’s learning. He finds one, but is surprised to find it already contains writing, and appears dismayed as he reads it. He finds Ezra in the watchtower, and tells him about the book. He reveals that it contains notes about the Obelisk in his own handwriting. Abram was one of the dead settlers.
