Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 3 E 24 Dia De Las Madres

Go To

On Mother’s Day, Elena tries to rally Luisa’s spirits after a revelation from the past causes Luisa to doubt her mothering skills.

  • Breather Episode: Outside of the implication Elena and her family's opinion of Esteban is about to take another shift, this episode is more mundane than others, nothing too crazy, no big mishap, no huge drama. While Elena does use her magic, it's more the equivalent of watching home videos to look back on happy memories.
  • Call-Back:
    • Isa makes use of her guitardion from "Island of Youth".
    • Luisa describes Esteban as the closest thing Elena has had to a big brother, calling back to "The Magic Within", where she explicitly says to Esteban during his trial that she loved him as if he were her own brother.
    • La Dulce Vida is shown to be in business during Raul's rule, and would later close for a couple of decades per "Sugar Rush", presumably because what happened in Shuriki's invasion.
  • Creator Cameo: The royal painter is based on the appearance of the show's character designer, Ritsuko Notani.
  • Flashback: To the Dia de las Madres following the death of Esteban's parents.
  • Happier Home Movie: Elena uses her "Tattletale Vision" (now properly referred to as "Truesight") to watch all the happy memories they had of when her parents and Esteban were still with the family.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the flashback, young Elena requested that the family pose in their aprons covered with chocolate, which her parents agreed to. In 'The Magic Within', Esteban claimed that nobody listened to him, unlike how they listened to Elena, this episode supported his point to an extent as Elena's parents agreeing with her suggestion meant they listened to her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Upon realizing Esteban wasn't a part of the family portrait from her favorite Mother's Day, Luisa becomes deeply remorseful, believing he was right about how their family treated him, and that she failed him as a Parental Substitute. Another past memory proves otherwise.
  • Never My Fault: Esteban's inability to take responsibility appears to be something he struggled with from an early age, as shown when he "apologizes" for a messy food fight he had with Elena.
    Elena: Abuelita! I'm so sorry!
Esteban: So am I... for what Elena just did!
  • No Antagonist: Unless you count present-day Esteban, there is no antagonist, just memories of simpler times.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: The episode focuses on Esteban adjusting to the then-recent passing of his parents and being taken in by his grandparents and his aunt's family. Esteban's isolation from his extended family is an emphasized point, with him seeing other kids with their mothers for Mother's Day and him being left out of the family portrait because he wanted to finish paying tribute to his late mother.
  • The Reveal: Esteban's mother's name is Margarita.
  • Sand In My Eyes: When he is crying upon seeing other kids with their mothers for Mother's Day, Esteban claims to just have chocolate in his eye.
  • Welcome Back, Traitor: Downplayed Trope. Present-day Esteban never appears in the episode to get forgiven, but it's implied that Elena and Luisa are getting to understand him better and move towards forgiving him, with Elena even calling him "Cousin Esteban".
