Tropes

  • An Aesop: Skipping school is against the law & it can lead to very serious consequences.
  • Bamboo Technology: Edd manages to use all the random junk the other Eds and Jonny gathers from the school to build a functional airplane! Sure, it doesn't work very well, but the fact that it actually flies at all is impressive enough.
  • Blackmail: Eddy refuses to let Jonny and Plank join him in escaping from school only for Plank to threaten to squeal on him.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Jonny's reaction after Eddy threatens him and Plank to keep quiet or else.
Jonny: I think I tinkled, Plank...
  • Cape Snag: Just as the plane makes it past the school fence, Edd's sweater gets caught on a branch, sling shooting them back into the school wall.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Though not a main character in this, this is one of a few episodes where Nazz has more screentime and dialogue than the majority of the cul-de-sac kids.
  • Gym Class Hell: What ultimately convinces Edd to join the others in trying to cut class, as he absolutely hates it, and his physical weakness means he struggles to perform even the most minor of workouts.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite originally refusing to join Eddy's plan to skip school, Double D eventually agrees to it to get out of gym class.
  • Parody: Of Prison Escape movies. Much of the scenes and set pieces play up the school's similarity to a prison. There's even an alarm that sounds when Nazz discovers the Eds are missing.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: By the time that the Eds (plus Jonny and Plank) manage to escape campus, school's already done for the day.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The title and plot of the episode is an obvious reference to Cool Hand Luke
  • Shrunken Organ: As Eddy whispers in Ed's ear, the inside of Ed's head is shown, the tiny brain growing out of a flowerpot.
  • Skipping School: The Eds (and Jonny's) ultimate goal is this. Ultimately they succeed; after school already let out for the day.
  • Sleeping Dummy: Not sleeping, but Edd made a dummy of himself and put it in the library in front of a book. Unfortunately, Nazz trying to get Double D to sign her petition gives him away.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Nazz believes that the fake dummy of Edd is the real one... even after the head pops out!
  • Unfinished, Untested, Used Anyway: Double D makes it clear when the group's plane takes off that it's unfinished. It's unknown if this is why four kids was one too many for the plane to carry.
  • Wallpaper Camouflage: Ed hides in the shower room, painted to match the white tiles in the stall.
