Go To

"See No Ed" is a Season 4 episode from Cartoon Network's show Ed, Edd n Eddy.

The kids of the Cul-de-sac are enjoying the day to themselves, but when realizing the Eds haven't popped up as usual, they start to suspect it's too good to be true and go investigating.

This episode provides examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Kevin isn't just a major player in this episode, he's the entire focus, with the episode told from his perspective until the last two minutes where we finally see what the Eds have been up to.
  • All Men Are Perverts: When Nazz's pants rip off and reveal her underwear, Kevin just stares at her and mutters, "Awesome."
  • Amusement Park of Doom: Regardless if the Eds were there or not, Chimp World was bound to end in disastrous failure as the rides fell apart the moment they were used and the children end up trapped in peril.
  • Animal Motifs: Chimp World.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Nazz gets worried that the Eds go missing and both Jimmy and Rolf even express guilt about their absence. But then Kevin lashes out at them for mourning over the Eds' absence, quite convinced it's just another scam.
Nazz: Gee, I hope they're okay.
    Kevin: Oh, please!
Rolf: Rolf is riddled with guilt over the missing Ed-boys!
Jimmy: I have a confession: I've wished this every birthday. Could it have come true?
  • Banana Peel: Kevin slips on one in Chimp World, and immediately lampshades how cliché it is.
    Kevin: Man, that's old.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Jimmy confesses that he has wished for the Eds to disappear every birthday. He and the other kids are elated by this at first, but when they can't find any trace of them anywhere several of them start to get worried, and Jimmy fears his wish may have come true, no longer enjoying it. This ends up being worse for Kevin, as him not knowing where the Eds are drives him into increasing paranoia.
  • Big Eater:
    • Ed, as usual, is shown to hide whole cooked chickens in his room.
    • Rolf spends his time at the park gorging on bananas, rind and all.
  • Bolivian Army Ending: The kids are left stranded in Chimp World and are under life-threatening situations, Kevin goes mad with paranoia and abandons his fellow friends. Meanwhile the Eds can't finish their monkey outfit.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: Nazz gets her pants caught on a nail and falls out of them, leaving her with her underwear exposed for the rest of her screentime.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For the Cul-de-sac kids, but mostly Kevin.
  • Dartboard of Hate: A pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey variant focusing on Eddy (target is his butt) at Jimmy's "No Eds Celebration" party. More evidence that the kids dislike Eddy out of all three Eds.
  • Didn't Think This Through: The Eds temporarily abandon their "Chimp World" scam to look for Ed's missing costume parts without considering that the kids would find their way in, especially when it's unlocked.
  • Dirty Coward: Kevin abandons everyone when they're desperately in need of rescue out of fear that he'll be next.
  • Disaster Dominoes: Downplayed since it isn't a complete chain, but each of the kids (minus Kevin) fall into peril because of each other's actions.
    • Jonny swings on a rope that eventually snaps, leaving him dangling for dear life. Rolf tries to rescue him by swinging on another rope, but crashes into a tree, opens the banana box by accident, and buries himself in the fruits.
    • Nazz tries to ride down a spiral slide, but it crashes down and severs the bridge that Jimmy and Sarah were playing on.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Rolf dislikes raisins, which is unfortunate for him since they seem to be Jimmy's favorite cookie and there were only raisin cookies at his celebration party. Rolf confuses the raisins in the cookies with rabbit droppings, and when Kevin corrects him on what they are, he insists they're the same thing.
  • Double-Meaning Title: "See No Ed" references "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil", the famous proverb embodied by the three wise monkeys. It also refers to the Eds' sudden disappearance, which kickstarts the plot.
  • Dramatic Irony: When we finally see that the Eds are looking for a missing mask for Ed's chimp costume, Edd worries that their Chimp World will be All for Nothing if they don't find it soon. Too bad for them, it's already too late, as the other kids have already discovered, played with, and broke Chimp World with them not around, meaning the whole scam was a bust.
  • Flat "What": Kevin when Rolf asks him if he can "rub Kevin's belly with the oils of fermented figs".
  • Foreshadowing: The single area none of the kids checked? The alleyway. Turns out that the Eds were there the whole time.
  • Genre Savvy: Just before Jimmy takes his turn with the skateboard, Kevin warns him by lampshading the Eds will be around soon to wreck their fun. Although Kevin was wrong in this episode, he was right to assume the Eds will spoil their day like in previous episodes.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Nazz is shown to wear green boxers with pink hearts when she loses her pants.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: In the ending iris-in, Edd is obviously covering his privates with his hands.
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: Nazz yells this when her head gets stuck in a tire.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: This episode makes it apparent how much being scammed and harassed by the Eds has worn down on the other kids, especially Kevin. Just one day without the Eds' scams or antics leads him to go insane from paranoia.
  • I Warned You: Edd: "I'd be the last to say I told you so, but if I had been in charge of..."
  • I Wished You Were Dead: The kids celebrate the Eds' absence at first, but after a while become unsettled, and even a bit remorseful. Jimmy even admits he used every birthday wish wanting them to go away forever, and isn't so sure of it now.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Kevin is portrayed as this when it comes to the Eds, twice:
    • He claims that the Eds' absence is all part of their next scam. Sure enough, the kids run into a clearly makeshift, unsafe theme park called "Chimp World", built by the Eds.
    • Considering the ensuing chaos, he was right to warn the kids not to go in Chimp World.
  • Jerkass Realization: The other kids are elated by the Eds being gone. After a while however, their absence becomes unsettling and some of them start to show concern that something genuinely bad has happened to them. By their own admission, they wanted to be rid of them, but not that badly.
  • Lower-Deck Episode: This episode is mostly just to show what the Cul-de-sac does without the Eds and then how they would react to the Eds' absence.
  • Naked People Are Funny: The episode ends with Eddy stripping himself and his friends down to their underwear to find Ed's monkey mask. He takes it a step further by removing Double D's pants and underwear, leaving him completely nude.
  • Paranoia Gambit: How do the Eds invoke this in Kevin? By simply not showing up at all. A rare accidental case.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Even though Kevin advised them not to do so, the kids went and played on the Chimp World slides anyways.
  • The Reveal: So where have the Eds been this entire time? The alleyway, where they've been searching for Ed's missing monkey mask - the same one that Jonny found in the drink cooler.
  • Running Gag: Each place that Jonny recounts having been features him having his head stuck on something.
  • Sanity Slippage: Kevin has been left so worn down by the Eds' antics that just a day of them being suspiciously absent leaves him increasingly paranoid that they're up to something.
  • Shoulders-Up Nudity: When Edd is stripped, he's only seen nude from the shoulders up. This is because Eddy swiped his underwear by accident.
  • Shout-Out:
    • While following the trail of bananas leading to Chimp World, Jimmy exclaims, "Follow the yellow rind road!"
    • Nazz mimics Tarzan while playing on the Chimp World ropes.
  • Skewed Priorities: Just why did Eddy and Edd think that Ed cosplaying a chimpanzee is so important to opening a playground for the kids to play in?
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: One of the episodes most focused on the other kids and thus humanizing their vendetta with the Eds and how putting up with them for most of their lives has worn down on their nerves.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Kevin's fate is left unknown, other than the fact that the Eds and the viewer hears him scream for some reason.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: While not exactly a hero, Kevin gets called out by the kids for abandoning them when they all cry for his help.
