Recap / Earth: Final Conflict S2E8 "Redemption"

Go To

Liam is told by Lili and Doors that Siobhan Beckett's CVI has failed and she only has a day to live. While out cave climbing, Beckett has an accident due to her failing health and falls. In her injured state, she envisions that she's on trial for crimes against humanity while in the service of the Taelons, with Da'an presiding as the judge, Doors as the prosecutor, and Liam as the defense attorney. Much of the "evidence" is shown as either witness testimony or flashbacks. Besides Liam and Augur searching for her, Zo'or also sends Sandoval to track her down, suspecting that her CVI may be breaking down, which would make her a security risk given all she knows about the Taelons. In this case, Sandoval is to eliminate her. At the end of the "trial", she is found guilty and sentenced to death. Liam finds her bleeding out on the cave floor, and she begs him to fight the Taelons. In her final moments, she realizes that Liam is her son and tells him to look for her among the stars. Sandoval finds Liam cradling her body.

  • Character Death: Siobhan Beckett dies after her CVI breaks down and she falls from a height in a cave.
  • Clip Show: Most of the flashbacks in Beckett's "trial" are from previous episodes, although some are edited. For example, she is shown to be receiving a CVI with Dr. Belman performing the procedure and Da'an observing. Everything but Beckett is from the pilot episode, except Boone on the table is replaced with Beckett. The clip show also includes historical black-and-white footage from Cambodia and Nuremberg.
  • Courtroom Episode: But one only inside Beckett's delirious mind. Da'an is the judge (wearing ornate robes), Doors is the prosecutor, and Liam is the defender (in full military uniform). Strangely, despite Beckett being Irish, the court appears to be of the American variety, including addressing the judge as "Your Honor". Although Liam's defense is structured more like that of a military court, including him wearing his military uniform and being addressed by his rank.
  • Deadly Nosebleed: Beckett's ears are bleeding, as her CVI has completely broken down, and she only has hours to live.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Beckett dies in her son's arms, having realized who he is moments before.
  • Dying as Yourself: Beckett's final moments are as herself, with the CVI no longer controlling her mind. She begs Liam to fight the Taelons and, after recognizing him as her son, regrets not having enough time to get to know him.
  • Just Following Orders: In Beckett's vision, Doors compares Beckett's actions to those of the [[Useful Notes/Cambodia Khmer Rouge]], the Nazis, the KGB, etc. When Liam counters that, unlike those men, Beckett was under her CVI's moral imperative to follow orders, Doors points out that it makes her even worse, since Beckett chose to give up her free will to the Taelons when she accepted the implantation. There's a bit of Fridge Logic there, since the early implants (and she was one of the first) weren't told about the behavioral imperative, so she'd have no way of knowing about it until after the implantation. Doors specifically references Nuremberg as the place where it was established that this trope cannot apply to war crimes.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Prior to the arrival of the Taelons, Beckett was a member of the Irish Army's anti-terrorism task force, fighting the IRA using illegal methods. After the arrival of the Taelons unified Ireland and Northern Ireland into a single country, she felt it was her duty to become a Companion Protector, as she was grateful to the Taelons for ending the bloodshed. This is also how Liam structures his final defense of her at the trial, stating it as "Duty, Honor, and Country".
  • Redemption Equals Death: The title of the episode refers to this.
