Recap / Duncanville S 1 E 4 Witch Day

Go To

Duncan is made the town's virgin for Witch Day and he and his friends tries to cancel the festival; Annie and Jack steal a dead woman's chili recipe to win the celebration's cook-off.

There is also a Witch Day celebration in the Season 2 episode 'Witch Day 2'.

Tropes:

  • The Atoner: Jing apologizes for ratting out Duncan with her sense of smell. Later, she yells at Annie and Jack to dump their chili on him to douse a fire.
  • Burn the Witch!: To celebrate Witch Day, the town burns a witch effigy full of everyone's darkest secrets to symbolize breaking free of past sins. Mia is upset that the town celebrates such a dark moment in American history and tries to protest against it.
  • Continuity Nod: Ol’ Oakie has a successor planted in its stead.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Bex when she takes the place of the witch effigy and realizes they might just find a new virgin and set her on fire.
  • Do Wrong, Right: Annie and Jack find a room of chili cook-off trophies and Jack says they can just steal one. Annie says they can't do that and have to earn a trophy...by stealing a recipe.
  • Eye Scream: Kimberly accidentally squirts mustard in a boy's eyes and tries to wash them by dipping a napkin in spicy pickle jar juice.
  • Fairy Tale Motif: The B-plot of Jack and Annie has one reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel.
  • Hoist Hero over Head: Jack lifts Duncan above his head, declaring to the crowd that they got their "town virgin" back.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Jack expresses pride at having historically accurate decorations, one of which has a witch with a hangman’s noose. Witches persecuted in the North American witch scare were burned at the stake, not hanged.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: When looking for Mrs. Martin's chili recipe, Annie discovers that she used to eat children. It later turns out that Mrs. Martin’s two "children" were actually captured by her and were the ones who killed her.
  • Morality Chain: When Duncan sets his sash on fire, Jing suggests Annie and Jack dump their chili on him. They're hesitant because of the cook-off, prompting Jing to yell at them to dump the chili on Duncan.
  • The Nose Knows: Jing has a talent for sniffing out truffles and later Duncan when he runs off.
  • Skewed Priorities: Annie uncovers Mrs. Martin's cannibalism and murder by two of her victims while looking for her chili recipe. Jack tells her they should consider calling the authorities, but decides that finding the recipe was more important and that she's already dead.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Annie stuffs two containers of frozen chili in her bra. Hilarity ensues.
