Recap / Duck Tales The Unbreakable Bin

Go To

Scrooge acquires a special glass from Gyro that makes the Money Bin invulnerable to attack. Nothing, not even Magica's most powerful spells can break through. That is, unless she were to acquire a bird that can shatter the glass with an ear-piercing shriek.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Achilles' Heel: While nothing else can so much as scratch Protect-O-Glass, the screech of a Quacken Yeeken Yeeker will easily cause it to shatter.
  • Always Need What You Gave Up: With Magica in possession of the Yeekers and able to shatter the Protect-O-Glass, Scrooge moans that he shouldn't have fired GizmoDuck.
  • Big Brother Is Watching: Magica uses her Crystal Ball to spy on Scrooge a couple times in the episode. It's what allowed her to learn that the Yeekers could break the Protect-O-Glass.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Magica was about to use a Yeeker to break the Protect-O-Glass, GizmoDuck swooped in just in time to get them away from the Money Bin.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Scrooge gives one when GizmoDuck tries to extort a raise out of him while being hired back.
  • Brick Joke: At the beginning of the third act, Magica uses magic wind powder to reach the native village Scrooge was at in time. In the climax, she attempted to use it to blow Scrooge and his friends away, only for a Yeeker to screech and shatter her container, causing her to be swept away instead.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: The Quacken Yeeken Yeekers. They may look pretty and have beautiful feathers, but as Scrooge's tour guide said, they're not nightingales, with their screeching singing able to shatter even Protect-O-Glass.
  • Flaming Meteor: When Magica is trying to break the Protect-O-Glass surrounding the Money Bin, she decides to "go the limit" and casts a spell which brings down one of these to strike it. Even that doesn't work.
  • Friend to All Living Things: When GizmoDuck stops Magica to allow a family of alley cats to cross the street, Magica finds it ridiculous, but GizmoDuck replies that they should show consideration to the city's kitties.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: The Quacken Yeeken Yeekers are capable of breaking all glass within a several-mile radius. This leads to problems when Magica seeks them out to break the Protect-O-Glass surrounding the Money Bin.
  • Hammerspace: Magica's bag is incredibly spacious, being able to hold a cauldron and a table of potions. Justified in that it's likely mystical.
  • Job-Stealing Robot: The Protect-O-Glass not only costs GizmoDuck his job guarding the Money Bin, but the entire security field is put out of business when everyone in Duckburg starts using it.
  • Mundane Utility: When Gyro first introduces the glasses he made for Scrooge out of Protect-O-Glass, GizmoDuck sees it allowing kids who wear glasses to place football without risk. Scrooge, however, has a much grander use for the glass.
  • Nightmare Sequence: The episode opens with Scrooge having a nightmare where the Money Bin is invaded by a rapidly growing number of Beagle Boys.
  • Not So Invincible After All: Protect-O-Glass at first seems virtually indestructible as it could withstand hammers, drills, explosions, and Magica's strongest spells. Unfortunately, it turns out that the screech-like singing of a Quacken Yeeken Yeeker can cause it to easily crumble to dust.
Dewey: Uh oh, Uncle Scrooge! Looks like Protect-O-Glass isn't all it's cracked up to be!
  • Oh, Crap!: Magica has this reaction when the Yeeker GizmoDuck was holding caused her container of wind powder to shatter all over her.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: When on vacation with his nephews Scrooge actually gets them each a soda instead of making them share one. The boys point out this the first time he's ever done that.
  • Shout-Out: Magica claimed her wind powder would blow Scrooge and his 'Tin Man' (GizmoDuck) back to Oz".
  • Singing Telegram: When GizmoDuck receives a telegram, he requests the courier to sing it, which he obliges...only for the message to be revealed as a termination notice.
  • Status Quo Is God: All the Protect-O-Glass is destroyed, restoring the need for security guards.
  • Why Do You Keep Changing Jobs?: After losing his job as Scrooge's security guard, GizmoDuck goes through several other jobs until Scrooge hires him back.
  • You Just Had to Say It: When the baby Yeeker lets out a screech that destroys all the glass in Duckburg, Scrooge groans to him "You and your big mouth!".
