Go To

After learning several Flyers followed Heather to Vanaheim, the Riders must stop them from reporting the sacred island's location to their leader.

Tropes

  • Brutal Honesty: Snotlout can't help himself in pointing out that the Flyers finding Vanaheim might be because of Heather. Astrid is not happy about this.
  • The Bus Came Back/Continuity Cameo: Alvin and some of his Outcast men briefly appear at the beginning of the episode, promising to look after Stoick and Berk while the Riders are off investigating the situation on Vanaheim.
  • Call-Back:
    • Snotlout gets hit by lightning again in this episode, and mentions it's the third time he's been struck by lightning in the past year.
    • Similarly, the Riders again mention and utilize the fact that lightning is attracted to metal objects (originally discovered in "When Lightning Strikes"), despite not fully understanding the science of how that works.
  • Disney Death: When the riders find the Sentinels, they presume that they are dead. In reality, they were actually in a healing coma, Meatlug surrounding them with lava to speed up the process.
  • Killed Offscreen: The Dragon Flyer the Riders are interrogating attempts to get away, only to encounter some Grim Gnashers in some bushes. The resulting skirmish sounds... unpleasant, to put it mildly, and not only is he never seen again, but he stops screaming and the Dragon Eye Lens he stole rolls out a moment later.
  • Mythology Gag: The Sentinels being assumed dead, only to turn out to be in a coma-like stupor, could be a reference to the first book, where it's stated that all dragons are capable of entering a hibernation state so deep that to the untrained eye they will appear dead.
  • Never Say "Die": Like the preceding episode, this episode heavily deals with both the continued situation of Stoick being on death's door and the Sentinels appearing to all be dead, all while avoiding saying the words "die" and "kill" as much as possible. This includes characters being interrupted just before they can say it, and the usual slew of inferences like "took care of."
  • Entertainingly Wrong: The Twins are convinced that Hiccup is able to forsee their crazy decisions (like torturing their prisoner) and have back-up supplies because he is a magical being or a wizard that is holding back on his magic power, when really he has just learned to anticipate their antics.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
Astrid: Well, I guess it's just you and me!
Hiccup: Always. (Beat) Sorry, was that corny?
    Astrid: Probably. Cute, though.
  • Laughing Mad: Tuffnut does not seem to have any awareness of when and if he laughs.
  • Mistaken for Terrorist: When Snotlout goes in to sink a foreign ship, Hiccup knocks him off of Hookfang to stop him, pointing out that he almost sunk Alvin.
  • Signed Up for the Dental: Despite Viggo, Krogan and Johann's tyrannical managing, the Flyers seem to have good pay, vacation time and health-care.
