When Hookfang's flame goes out after Snotlout pushes his training too hard, the riders learn the only cure is to feed him Fireworm gel. In other words, they have to steal the burning firecomb of Fireworm dragons before it's too late.

Tropes

  • The Ace: Hiccup is the only one who's able to avoid Astrid during training.
  • Arc Words: Snotlout borrows Hiccup's and Stoic's "I did this" from the first film.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Snotlout is driven to tears by the thought of Hookfang dying. Similarly, Hookfang throws away the Fireworm comb despite his condition in order to save Snotlout from the wrath of the Fireworm Queen.
  • Curse Cut Short: Twice, both from the twins.
    Ruffnut: I heard that if you sit on a Terrible Terror, you can make flames come out of your—
    Tuffnut: (repeating what he's heard Spitelout say) Stick your head up a yak's
  • Disney Death: Hookfang suffers one after the Fireworm Queen stings him. He lies unconscious until her sting starts to heal him.
  • Epic Fail: The twins, when trying to hide from Astrid behind a tree, don't realize that Barf and Belch's posterior is entirely visible. They also don't realize that they lost.
  • Heel Realization: Snotlout on realizing that Hookfang is dying because of him. He says It's All My Fault when Hookfang suffers his Disney Death.
  • Heroic RRoD: Hookfang suffers from this at the start of the episode.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Even though he's dying, Hookfang returns the firecomb that Snotlout stole from the Fireworm Queen so that she won't unleash her wrath on his rider.
  • Hope Spot: The riders think that they can heal Hookfang by gathering all the Fireworms on Berk and have their light heal the Monstrous Nightmare. As it turns out, there aren't enough Fireworms to do the job.
  • Inappropriate Hunger: Tuffnut smells meat cooking, not realizing that it's because he's sitting on a Fireworm.
  • Ironic Echo: Astrid calls Hiccup predictable during training. Hiccup proceeds to outmaneuver and outsmart her, and calls her predictable in turn.
  • It's All My Fault: Snotlout knows it's his fault his dragon is ill. "I did this to Hookfang."
  • Kick the Dog: Spitelout doesn't care if Hookfang dies, and makes this clear when he tells his son that he can just replace his dragon like a broken sword.
  • Mama Bear: The Fireworm Queen doesn't appreciate intruders stealing from her nest.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Snotlout when Hookfang suffers his Disney Death.
  • Mythology Gag: Book!Snotlout's dragon was called Fireworm. Here the Fireworms are related to Monstrous Nightmares and thus can heal movie!Snotlout's dragon.
  • Never My Fault: For the first half of the episode, Snotlout blames Hookfang for being stubborn when it's clear that something is wrong with him.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: A mutual case. The Fireworm Queen realizes that the riders aren't there to harm her nest, but to help Hookfang. She still looks like she's attacking to the riders, especially when she injects Hookfang with her venom, which isn't to hurt him, but to reignite his flame.
  • Race Against the Clock: The riders need to get firecomb from the Fireworm nest and feed it to Hookfang before his lack of flame kills him.
  • Sand In My Eyes: Snotlout starts crying when he's forced to acknowledge that Hookfang may die, and refuses to admit he's crying.
    Snotlout: (trying not to sob) CAN'T YOU SEE HOW DUSTY IT IS IN HERE, RIGHT?
  • Shout-Out: A minor one, to Pokémon: What reptilian, dragon-like Pokémon also dies if it's flame goes out?
  • Tempting Fate: Hiccup tells Snotlout to not touch anything in the Fireworm nest. Snotlout immediately rips some firecomb out of the wall.
  • Training from Hell: The episode opens with Snotlout putting Hookfang through this, which stresses him to the point that his flame goes out.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Hookfang's scales turn gray as his health declines.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Snotlout steals a firecomb from the Fireworm's nest to save Hookfang.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Snotlout has never felt empathy before and caring for others; Astrid explains to him what it is after she catches him tearing up.
