The Z-Fighters get their asses handed to them by Androids. Knowing that Super Saiyans may not be enough to stop them, Piccolo goes to an unexpected source for help.
But first, Dr. Tropes...the hell happened? I had like 15 of these!
- Adaptational Deviation: Krillin hints that they may need a "Super Namekian" to even the odds against the Androids, which is why Piccolo flew off so he can meet with Kami. In the canon, they all come to grips that Piccolo and Kami fusing will cancel out the power of the Dragon Balls. Here, none of them are aware of this effect until much later, though Kami warns Piccolo of this first.
- All for Nothing: Thanks to the beatdown the Z-Fighters suffered, both Piccolo and Tien agree to this conclusion as the Androids are much stronger than them, even after three years of training and having two Super Saiyans on their side.
- Call-Back:
- Toriyama the bird from the "Revenge of Cooler" movie returns as one of Android 16's bird-watching documentations. It apparently has also fulfilled Goku's request to teach a dinosaur how to ride a ball.
- Chekhov's Gun: Aside from the fact that he's not Goku ("GOKU... NEGATIVE"), Krillin's constant quacking saves him from getting attacked by any of the three current Androids, including 16 ("BIRD... DUCK?").
- Computers Speak Binary: Played with. - Foreshadowing: At the end of the episode, Kami hints that the androids may not be the only thing they need to worry about. The last shot is the camera panning down from Dr. Gero's destroyed lab to a basement below the lab where a larva creature is sleeping inside a tube.
- 18's peck on Krillin's cheek is also played this way in 17 and 18's dialogue immediately after. In DBZA, 18's mutual affection for Krillin would be more obvious, much earlier, than in the original.
- Fun with Subtitles: In the English (Canada) subtitles, it refers to Krillin as "Cocker Spaniel" immediately after 17 says he's as threatening as one.note And after he receives his kiss from 18, he's referred to as "Infatuated as Fuck".
- Mrs. Briefs is credited as "GILF" in the subtitles as well.
- The Gag Sub also counts how many times Mr. Popo says "All these squares make a circle".
- I Warned You: Android 17 warned the rest of the Z-Fighters last episode what would would happen if they try to interfere in the fight between Vegeta and 18. With the exception of Krillin, everyone else suffered a brutal Curb-Stomp Battle as a result, though none of them died like Trunks predicted.
- Jewish Mother: Korin starts talking like this while worrying about Yajirobe.
- Lampshade Hanging: While Piccolo is talking to Kami about the Android threat, Nail mentions on the side how there is a "tone shift" in the atmosphere. Kami then responds how the Androids will soon pale in comparison to an even greater threat on the horizon.
- Locked Out of the Loop: Apparently Bulma never told Trunks about the fact Vegeta tried to destroy the planet in search for the Dragon Balls.
- Madness Mantra: "All these squares make a circle." Said repeatedly by Mr. Popo during his acid trip.
- Oh, My Gods!: When Piccolo gets infuriated at Krillin's insistence that maybe Piccolo can become a "Super Namekian"Piccolo: Oh my other me, shut up! (blasts at Krillin, jumps up) You can all kiss the greenest part of my ass! (flies off)
Tien: There are greener parts of his ass? - Refuge in Audacity: TFS writes in Mr. Popo's in-canon fear in this part of the Cell saga as him having dropped a gallon of LSD.Piccolo: A gallon?!
Kami: A literal gallon. Out of a milk jug. I don't even know where he got it from; he never leaves the—
Popo: KAMI? I NEED YOU TO TELL ME... THAT I CAN LEAVE THE LOOKOUT IF I WANT TO.
Kami: Mr. Popo, you may leave the lookout if you—
Popo: BITCH, DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

Popo: All these squares make a circle... - Schmuck Bait: 18 decides to bait Vegeta into getting his other arm broken.Android 18: 'Ey, so, who's got two broken arms and is a total bitch?
Vegeta: You stupid bint, you only broke one of my ar-
*Android 18 steps down on Vegeta's non-broken arm, causing it to snap. Vegeta begins squealing in pain*
Android 18: This guy! - Ship Tease: Android 18's kiss for Krillin is treated a little more seriously on her side, as she doesn't deny it when Android 17 asks if she's got a thing for short guys.
- The Stinger: After the close, we hear a phone call between Korin and Yajirobe.
- This Is Gonna Suck: When Piccolo goes off to re-fuse with Kami, Piccolo dreads that he might have a second voice in his head and was already annoyed with Nail from their own fusion back on Namek. There's also the fact that both Piccolo and Kami are hardly on good terms.
- Villain Respect: Krillin knows he is outmatched after witnessing his allies getting crushed by the Androids. Regardless, he attempts to stop them from going after Goku. 18 finds his attempt "cute" and gives him a kiss on the cheek before they fly off.
- What Does She See in Him?: After what occurred above, 17 asks 18 if she's into short people. 18 doesn't give a straight answer, but claims that "societal definitions of 'beauty' are BS, anyway".
- What the Hell, Hero?:
- The middle part of a three-fer when Krillin tells Tien, Trunks, and Piccolo what happened after the battle between him and the Androids, especially 18:
- Krillin calls out Future Bulma for not telling Trunks that Vegeta tried to kill them all back in the Saiyan Saga. He then calls out Trunks himself because the 17 and 18 they just met are much stronger than the pair in his future.Krillin: Jesus, Future Bulma/Trunks! What the shit?!
