Not sure who has it worse in this episode: Vegeta, or Gohan

Gohan steals Vegeta's Dragon Ball, resulting in the Saiyan Prince flying into a rage mode the likes of which have never been seen before. To make matters worse, Freeza has called in his Quirky Miniboss Squad to replace the late Dodoria and Zarbon...

So what are ya doin'? Thwartin' my tropes?

  • Beam of Enlightenment: Happens when Vegeta detects Gohan's power-up, snapping him out of his Rage Breaking Point.
Vegeta: Where am I? (to Krillin) Why are you here? Where's Nappa?
  • Beyond the Impossible: Vegeta's scream not only reaches everyone on Namek but into the cold vacuum of space, the afterlife and the future on Earth. That's how mad he is!
  • Can't Catch Up: Vegeta quickly puts Gohan in his place after his power-up. It's a reminder that, as a child whose power is still uncontrolled, he's still far behind Vegeta in his normal state, especially after Vegeta's Saiyan biology grants him another power boost after recovering from Zarbon's attack.
Gohan: Oh no you don't. With this power-up, I'm now as strong as you were when we fought on Earth.
Vegeta: Congratulations, you're still weaker than the last three guys I killed.
Gohan: Wow. I now know what it's like to feel like Krillin.
    Krillin: Sucks, doesn't it?
  • Cluster B Bomb: As part of his "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Bulma, Krillin says variations of the word "bitch" a total of 8 times in two separate scenes. Who knows how many more times he said it between those offscreen.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: This is technically the first appearance of Future Trunks in the Abridged Series.
Future Trunks: Alright, mom. Once that time machine is done, I can go back into the past, to save Goku, and my father— (hears Vegeta's scream) ...Daddy???
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When he finds that the last Dragon Ball he hidden is gone, he slowly realizes that Gohan took it using the Dragon Ball Radar. However, it took Ghost Nappa to finish his thought.
Ghost Nappa: He took the Dragon Ball...
  • Foreshadowing: Gohan returns with the Dragon Ball Vegeta hid, but warns Krillin and Bulma that he will come after them once he finds out, and they should find a new hiding spot.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Gohan's first uttering of "Crapbaskets!" is in this episode when Vegeta threatens to turn the area Gohan's hiding in into even more of a wasteland.
    • Vegeta, when he realizes the Ginyu Force are coming.
    • Earlier, when Krillin finds out Gohan took Vegeta's Dragon Ball.
  • Rage Breaking Point: And how! Even Ghost Nappa lampshades that Vegeta may have hit his:
Ghost Nappa: I think your rage broke, Vegeta.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Krillin is forced to surrender the Dragon Ball to Vegeta, Bulma accuses Krillin for "single-handedly dooming everyone". Krillin then calls her out for being a "bitch", always complaining and not doing anything useful on Namek, despite their situation. She seems unaffected by this and simply dope slaps him in response once he's finally finished.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In his Rage Breaking Point, Vegeta has bloodshot eyes. When Krillin tells him he doesn't have the Dragon Ball, his previously-injured right eye hemorrhages and turns solid red. Oddly, it goes back to normal when he snaps to attention after sensing Gohan's power-up.
  • Running Gag: When an adult (Vegeta, Krillin, Guru) says something that might be construed as uncomfortable towards Gohan, Gohan says "I need an adult", to which the other says, "I am an adult".
  • The Scream: Vegeta's scream is so strong, it travels all over the planet, through space, the afterlife, and 20 years into the future.
Gohan: Uh, Krillin? Do you hear that?
    Krillin: I feel that.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode title references It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
    • Near the beginning of the episode, both Vegeta and Gohan are flying with their respective Dragon Balls singing "Don't Stop Me Now".
    • Nappa's last line for a while: Eeeeey!
    • The Ginyu Force make their arrival at the end of the episode by creepily announcing "We're heeereee..."note
  • Stunned Silence: Krillin has no words to Gohan after learning he stole one of the Dragon Balls Vegeta hid.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Vegeta gloats that he's the strongest person on Namek next to Freeza. Then…
Guru: Heeeey. Just thought I'd inform you all that there are several high power levels approaching the planet. There are five of them in total. And they're all incredibly FLAMBOYANT!
    • Also earlier in the episode, when Vegeta's recovering from his rage breaking and being reminded that he killed Nappa, Vegeta reassures himself that Nappa's "dead...forever." In the season finale, thanks to the Dragon Balls reviving everyone killed by Freeza and his minions, Nappa—who Vegeta killed while still working for Freeza—ends up coming Back from the Dead.
  • That's an Order!: When they detect Vegeta, Krillin makes sure Gohan gets to Guru.
    Gohan: What do we do?
Krillin: Run, Gohan. Run as fast as you can!
    Gohan: But I—
Krillin: DO AS I SAY, FOR I AM THE HEAVENLY BUDDHA!note
    Gohan: (Beat) Wha—
    Krillin: JUST GO!
  • This Is Going to Suck: Gohan mentions this will happen when Vegeta realizes he took his Dragon Ball.
Gohan: Guys, I think we should find a new location.
Krillin: Why? What's wrong with this place?
Gohan: Because we have ten minutes before Vegeta finds out that I just stole this.
    Krillin: (squeaks nervously)
  • Volleying Insults: Vegeta's encounter with Nail is this, until Guru interrupts them and informs them of the arrival of the Ginyu Force.

"We're heeeeeerrrrrreeeeee..."note
