Just the Tropes, Ma'am:

  • Dirty Old Man: It wasn't just in the #MeToo era that churches found they had men who were more interested in seducing attractive young women of their congregation than they were listening to the Word of the Lord. Friday and Smith question a few at one church to find a possible suspect in a harassment complaint filed by a young woman who just recently become a member.
  • Hollywood Homely: In universe. The TV version has never been uploaded to video sharing services, but a radio transcription – later adapted to TV – has. It can be reasonably surmised that one reason the woman has never had a relationship (which she is apparently longing for) is because she isn't exactly the prettiest woman in the world.
  • Old Maid: Friday and Smith eventually realize they're dealing with a woman who fears she's become one of these ... hence, why she began writing lewd letters, sending them to herself and then claiming they were coming from one of the men in her congregation. After Friday tells her that some of the facts in her story are inconsistent, she eventually lets on that she has what today might be diagnosed as a form of social anxiety – trouble making and keeping good friends – and this was actually a cry for help. Friday is sympathetic but charges her with filing a false police report and she is eventually fined and given probation.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Someone at the local church has been sending naughty letters to a recent new congregant, and he wants her.
