Recap / Doom Patrol 2019 S 1 E 04 Cult Patrol

Go To

Willoughby Kipling (Mark Sheppard) recruits the Patrol to stop an evil cult from ending the world.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: The reward for Elliot's parents. Elliot's dad was dead when it happened, though.
  • Broken Pedestal: Jane no longer trusts or likes Cliff after seeing him massacre Doctor Fuchs's henchmen.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Kipling is a fantastically powerful magician who is also a washed-up drunk and half-insane.
  • Captain Ersatz: As in the comics, Kipling was created because Grant Morrison wasn't allowed to use John Constantine. Notably, Kipling is closer to how Constantine would become than how he started out in Swamp Thing.
  • Death Seeker: All of the cult is this, wanting the Uncreator to unmake them along with the rest of reality.
  • Driven to Suicide: Elliot tries this but can't bring himself to do it, even to save the world.
  • Kick the Dog: Elliot's mother murders his father in front of him once he tries to get him to run.
  • Just a Stupid Accent: Penny Farthing has a very fake Eliza Doolittle-esque accent.
  • Lap Pillow: Cliff wakes up to find "Jane" (actually Baby Doll) asleep on his lap, only for Hammerhead to take over and freak out at him.
  • The Load: Penny Farthing is a somewhat cowardly sweet girl who is completely useless in saving the world.
  • Magic Versus Science: Kipling and Vic have a debate about it. In the end, both get to show off in the DCU.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: The Cult of the Unwritten Book wants to bring an end to the world and all other dimensions.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Cliff is made to realize he's been using Jane as this.
  • Shoot the Dog: Kipling's solution is to just kill Elliot to stop the end of the world. The others stop him.
  • Tyke Bomb: Elliot was raised to bring about the end of the world by his parents. He doesn't realize this until his father tells him the truth.
