The Doctor arrives in a run-down subway and immediately has to flee a tribe of cannibals. He discovers a few sane survivors, and attempts to aid their escape to a paradise called the "Countryside" as he tries to find the TARDIS again.
Tropes:
- Cannibal Clan: Led by the Cannibal Chief.
- Downer Ending: The survivors board a manually-controlled train to the Countryside, while the Doctor gets away in the TARDIS. He rematerializes outside the city to find it's an equally desolate and radioactive wasteland. He waits for hours to see if their train passes, but it never appears. The Doctor leaves, glumly noting he feels certain they didn't make it, and that since their unspoilt "Countryside" didn't exist, perhaps it's for the best.
- Sinister Subway: The entire story takes place in one.
