Recap / Doctor Who Magazine 390 Death To The Doctor

Go To

A story featuring an alliance of enemies of the Doctor, who start getting picked off.

  • Anti-Climax Boss: Kraarn of the Kraagaaron is, according to Zargath, the most evil being in Mutter's Spiral and had laid waste to whole solar systems and enslaved entire species. He is killed by an electrical surge while explaining his plan to the others, who believe the Doctor was responsible. It turns out it was just an accident.

  • Black Comedy: The villains come across basically as losers and keep killing each other in paranoia they are the villains.
  • Mexican Stand Off: The last three villains, Bolog, Plink and the Mentor, are caught in one, believing one of the others is the Doctor. As they hear the TARDIS materializing they shoot each other.
  • Mutual Kill: Zargath shoots Valis, however Valis turns out to be flammable, and the explosion kills Zargath. The last three aliens end up killing each other in a shoot-out.
  • Late to the Tragedy: The story ends with the Doctor arriving at an asteroid base strewn with corpses and lamenting that he wasn't there in time to prevent whatever happened happening.
  • Legion of Doom: A group of loser villains who have all been defeated by the Doctor gather together at an asteroid base to plot to kill the Doctor.

  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: The Mentor seems a parody of the Master, reassembling an overweight version of him, claiming to have mind-control powers, having a similar name, and encountered the Third Doctor and the Brigadier. Like the other villains, he comes across as rather pathetic.
  • Ten Little Murder Victims: Parodied/subverted. One of the aliens is killed but the scanner shows that only the aliens are in the base, making them conclude the Doctor is among them, and causing them to start killing each other. It turns out the first death was just an electrical accident and the alien's paranoia did the rest.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Zargath's species' is allergic to water, despite looking like Fish people. The Ninth Doctor stopped his attempt to invade the Powell Estate by making it rain.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: Valis was defeated by the Eighth Doctor two weeks ago. The Doctor who arrives shortly after his death is the Tenth.
