Recap / Disenchantment S 4 E 10 Bean Falls Apart

Go To

Bean comes face-to-face with her darker half, while Zog goes after the runaway Derek and Bear Boy.

Tropes:

  • Annoying Laugh: One upside to Freckles' imprisonment is that he has to listen to Laughing Horse's chortling at his despair.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Dagmar successfully takes over Dreamland.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: The two Beans. Bean seems to win initially, until it turns out this was what Bad Bean wanted.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After she is thrown into the ocean, Bean is rescued by Mora.
  • Bluff the Imposter: Elfo has to chose between the two Beans, and asks whether they love him. Good Bean says she loves and respects him, while Bad Bean makes a show of affection. This proves to Elfo which Bean is which, since Good Bean would never say she loves him.
  • Brick Joke: P.T. has replaced Mora in his freakshow with one of the walruses of Walrus Island.
  • Call-Back: One of Bean's dream deaths has her impaling herself on the sword-throne the same way Guysbert did, right down to the same expression as she dies.
    • When Luci manages to enter Bean's dream, he enters as a laughing skull, just like he said he would in the same episode as the above example.
  • The Cameo: The Archdruidess can briefly be seen riding her motorcycle in the background as Derek, Jasper and Freckles arrive in Steamland.
  • Distressed Dude: Derek, Bear Boy, Snarla, Freckles, Laughing Horse, Zog and Odval all wind up in P.T. McGee's freakshow.
  • Enemy Within: What Bad Bean starts out as. Halfway through, she graduates to Enemy Without.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Satan actually looks a little disturbed when Dagmar hoists up Bad Bean's head.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Inverted. Bad Bean starts out in a duplicate of one of Dagmar's outfits, before switching to Bean's usual tunic and breeches combo.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Averted; it seems Odval and Zog stumbled upon another secret elf meeting just in time to overhear something important, but it only turns out the Elves are as clueless about what is truly going on with Dreamland Castle as Zog himself is.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Bad Bean tutors Bean in how to access and utilize her magic lightning, so that she can escape.
  • I Lied: Bad Bean lies to Bean, then says she's lying about lying. Unless she's lying.
  • Killing Your Alternate Self: The Battle in the Center of the Mind eventually spills over into the real world.
  • Lack of Empathy: Unsurprisingly, Dagmar, who quite casually picks an unconscious Bean up and dumps her over a balcony into the ocean below.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Freckles tricked Derek into running away so he could sell him and Bear Boy to P.T.'s freakshow. Then the minute P.T. realizes he's a living puppet, he captures Freckles as well.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: The elves going over what they don't know mirrors the viewers, and how they're similarly in the dark to just what the heck's going on with the show's mysteries.
  • Off with His Head!: How Bean kills Bad Bean in the end.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Neither Bean is any good at impersonating the other. Bad Bean is blunt and snappish with everyone, while Bean is too nervous and awkward to maintain the pretense of being Bad Bean around Dagmar for more than a minute.
  • The Power of Hate: How Bean's magic powers work, and she has to be really angry to get it going.
  • Punk in the Trunk: How Freckles is captured once P.T. realizes he is a puppet.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: Dagmar takes over Dreamland, half the cast is imprisoned in Steamland, but Bean and Mora are reunited. Also, Ursula turns out to be alive and well, even though she's now a captive in P.T.'s freakshow.
  • The Stinger: After the credits, there is a brief scene of Dagmar, Satan and Evil Bean's severed head sitting on the thrones of Dreamland, with Dagmar looking straight at the camera.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Bad Bean provokes Bean into killing her because whoever dies in the dream gets to wake up in her body in the real world.
