Recap / Dennis The Menace 1986 S 2 E 9

Go To

The ninth episode of the second season of Dennis the Menace (1986), and the seventy-fourth episode of the series overall.

Menaced Marriage

Dennis reluctantly accompanies his folks to Mr. Wilson's niece's wedding and causes various mischief. First, he brings Willy, his pet frog, who causes a panic to the guests and to Margaret, who's the flower girl at the wedding. He then swallows the wedding ring. Ruff also manages to arrive and tears up the bride's dress. Despite the hitches, the wedding is a success and Alice is sure the bride and groom's marriage will only get better once they leave Dennis behind.

Dennis of the Yukon

Henry's company sends him on an assignment in the Yukon to conduct tests at a secret radar installation. He takes Ruff with him since his new collar has secret codes for the tests. Dennis sneaks on the plane and Henry reluctantly takes him along for the mission, but when they arrive at the facility, a spy posing as a fur trader named Jacques LaBrouche has raided it, then makes off with the dogsled, including Ruff as the lead dog. Dennis pursues LaBrouche to his cabin, only to get captured and tied up by the villain. After freeing himself, the boy and Ruff chase LaBrouche, eventually winding up at a dogsled race, then are able to stop him cold when they get him into a bobsled run—without a bobsled—leading to his arrest by the Mounties. Dennis and Ruff are made honorary Mounties themselves and proudly wear their uniforms on the plane ride home.

Seal of Approval

Barko the seal is on his way to Ocean World, but slides out of his transport van and joins in the fun as Dennis, Gina, and Jay are playing baseball. Afterwards, Dennis takes him home, but eventually, he sneaks off to Mr. Wilson's house where he eats his catch of the day, then plays around as the kids try to corral him. Mr. Wilson's house is messed up, but the kids manage to get Barko outside where the van's driver finally finds him. As a reward, Dennis stars along with the seal in Ocean World's feature show, as his mother is shocked to see him on TV.

"Menaced Marriage" provides examples of:

  • Accidental Kiss: Mr. Wilson's niece and her fiance try to kiss each other, but both end up kissing Ruff, much to their disgust.
  • Alliterative Title: Menaced Marriage.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comparison: This exchange when Margaret finds Willy in her bouquet of flowers:
Dennis: Oh, boy! Margaret found Willy!
Alice: Face to face with that creature? What a horrifying experience!
Dennis: Yeah, I hope Willy is okay.
  • Clothing Damage: Mr. Wilson's Niece has her dress torn up when Ruff sits atop it and Dennis has to pull him off.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Margaret exclaims, "Dennis Mitchell, you humiliated me in front of all these people!" when she finds Willy in her bouquet of flowers.
  • Nephewism: Mr. Wilson is revealed to have a niece in this episode.
  • Wedding Episode: This episode revolves around Dennis and his parents attending the wedding of Mr. Wilson's niece and her fiance. Margaret is the flower girl, and Dennis' pets, Ruff and Willy, cause havoc at the wedding due to the former having followed Dennis and his parents, and the latter having been smuggled in by Dennis.

"Dennis of the Yukon" provides examples of:

  • Comically Missing the Point: When Dennis follows LaBrouche to his hideout, he tells the sled dogs, "Mush", then says to the viewers, "Although personally, I hate the stuff."
  • Hair-Trigger Avalanche: When Dennis chases after LaBrouche on a dog sled, Henry tells him, "Wait, Dennis, come back!". Henry's boss clamps his hand over Henry's mouth, warning him not to talk so loud, as he might cause an avalanche. Sure enough, Henry does cause an avalanche that buries him and his boss.
  • Hold Up Your Score: When Dennis gets LaBrouche launched into a bobsled run without a bobsled, three judges hold up score cards. The ones on the left and right hold up 8.5s, while the one in the middle holds up a 9.0.
  • Kid Hero: Dennis sneaks aboard Henry's plane in Ruff's pet carrier and foils the plan of LaBrouche, an enemy spy, being made an honorary Mountie as a reward.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: When LaBrouche tries to escape from Dennis in a dog sled race, he writes a number 13 on a piece of paper (claiming it to be his lucky number) and puts it on his back to pose as one of the racers.
  • Show Within a Show: This episode begins with Dennis and Ruff watching Sgt. Rick of the Mounties.
  • Sled Dogs Through the Snow: When the lead dog pulling Henry's sled is sick, Ruff substitutes for him. Henry's sled is later hijacked by LaBrouche, and Dennis chases him down, only to get captured. After Dennis escapes, he and Ruff continue to chase LaBrouche down.

"Seal of Approval" provides examples of:

  • Misblamed: Two In-Universe examples:
    • When Barko eats the fish Mr. Wilson caught and was planning to have as his lunch, Mr. Wilson thinks it was Dennis' cat, Hot Dog, who ate it.
    • Later, when Mr. Wilson catches Dennis, Gina, and Jay in his house, he accuses them of trashing it, when it was actually Barko who did it, and they were trying to stop him.
  • Priceless Ming Vase: Barko balances one belonging to Mr. Wilson on his nose, and Dennis catches it before it can fall to the floor and break.
  • Sweet Seal: Barko escapes from his transport van and befriends Dennis, Gina, and Jay when he joins them in their baseball game.
