Go To

The fourteenth episode of Dennis the Menace (1986).

Henry the Menace

Henry's father comes to visit, and he tells Dennis what Henry was like as a little boy. Not surprisingly, the child-sized Henry and the present-day Dennis had a lot in common; they both created chaos wherever they went.

Come Fly With Me

Dennis and PeeBee enter a friendly challenge of building and flying their own airplanes. Dennis' turns out to be a rickety old thing, while PeeBee's makes a Lear jet look like scrap metal. Once in the air, PeeBee flies rings around Dennis, making him look bad. However, in the end, PeeBee's plane malfunctions and Dennis has to rescue him. Dennis ultimately turns out to be both the hero and the winner.

Camping Out

Dennis and Joey camp out in a treehouse in the Mitchell backyard. Mr. Wilson decides to scare them, but he doesn't know the boys have rigged all kinds of booby-traps around the tree house, and he gets caught in every one of them.

"Henry the Menace" provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Name: Henry's favorite cowboy was named Texas Ted.
  • Circling Birdies: Stars spin around the taxi driver's head when Dennis, excited to see his grandfather, runs him over in the process.
  • Dog Walks You: Invoked by Dennis; he rides his skateboard while holding onto Ruff's leash so Ruff can pull him along. He accidentally breaks Henry's fence when he rolls across it.
  • Generation Xerox: In addition to Henry being a troublemaker when he was Dennis' age and showing a similar interest in cowboys, he also had a dog named Arf as his pet.
  • Like Father, Like Son: This episode reveals that Henry was every bit as rambunctious as Dennis was when he was a child.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Dennis' grandfather tells Dennis stories about Henry when he was Dennis' age.

"Come Fly With Me" provides examples of:

  • Ace Pilot: Both Dennis and PeeBee are this in this episode; the former builds a fully functional airplane from the junk in Henry's garage, while the latter builds a fighter jet. The two challenge each other to a race, and for a while, are evenly matched. Dennis wins the race due to the radio in PeeBee's jet overloading its main circuit control.
  • Animal Athlete Loophole: There ain't no rule that says a dog can't play football! There is, however, a rule that PeeBee points out in the beginning of this episode, where plays cannot be made with a player's mouth, so sadly Ruff is disqualified.
  • Bamboo Technology: Dennis builds a fully functional airplane from the junk in Henry's garage.
  • The Big Race: In this episode, Dennis and PeeBee challenge each other to a race in their homemade airplanes. Dennis ends up winning due to PeeBee's plane malfunctioning.
  • Foreshadowing: Before PeeBee shows Dennis his airplane, he says that he really should have taken more time with it. What he said later turns out to be true, since the radio in his jet overloads its main circuit control, causing it to malfunction.
  • Shout-Out: This episode's title is a reference to the Frank Sinatra song of the same name.

"Camping Out" provides examples of:

  • Bedsheet Ghost: Mr. Wilson's ghostly wail frightens Ruff, who manages to pull a towel off a clothesline, which covers him up. When Mr. Wilson sees Ruff and hears him howling underneath it, he thinks Ruff is a real ghost.
  • Camping Episode: Dennis and Joey camp out in Dennis' treehouse in this episode, but Mr. Wilson tries to dissuade them from doing so by telling them about tree ghosts. This only persuades them to set up ghost traps, which he gets caught in.
  • Food as Bribe: Joey is reluctant to join Dennis in his treehouse at first, but Dennis manages to convince him to come up by telling him he has chocolate chip cookies in it.
  • "Home Alone" Antics: When Mr. Wilson tells Dennis about tree ghosts to try to dissuade him from camping out, Dennis sets up a bunch of ghost traps. Mr. Wilson tries to spook Dennis and Joey, but only gets himself caught in the traps.
  • Trampoline Tummy: When Dennis and Joey swing down from Dennis' treehouse on a rope, they bounce off Mr. Wilson's tummy.
Dennis: Good thing Mr. Wilson has a soft tummy!
  • Treehouse of Fun: Dennis builds a treehouse in this episode with a basket elevator.
