Recap / DEATH BATTLE! S03E08 - Cammy VS Sonya

Go To

Mystical ninjas, evil sorcerors, gods. Tournaments these days seem to attract all sorts, don't they? And yet there's always a few seemingly-ordinary people brave enough— or stupid enough— to step into the ring.

Like Cammy White, Street Fighter's "ass-assin" turned secret agent. And Sonya Blade, the special forces general of Mortal Kombat.

In season three's eighth episode, a pair of female fighting game special operations commandos step into the ring. The hosts will compare a vessel for astral powers against a figure honed by decades of experience, military-grade training against military-power hardware, for though Cammy White and Sonya Blade are both well-deserving of their fame and prowess, only one has enough of the know-how to prevail in a death battle.

Wizard and Boomstick begin the episode by featuring a showcase of Cammy White, whom had spent most of her life as an enforcer in the Shadaloo organization, serving under M. Bison, Shadaloo's leader, one of his personal assassins and bodyguards known as Dolls. Cammy's status as leader of the Dolls can be attributed to the machinations of Bison; aware his Psycho Power, fueled by the evil that resides within his soul, was tearing his body apart, Bison actually created Cammy as a clone body for him to possess. The Shadaloo crime lord brainwashed her into loyally following Shadaloo's orders, that is until Cammy met the Indian yogi Dhalsim, who saw Bison corrupting the young girl and granted her mind self-awareness. Now aware that her former boss was actually a threat to the world, Cammy defected from Shadaloo's forces, joining the British paramilitary organization known as Delta Red in their fight against the criminal force.

Thanks to her training in both Shadaloo and Delta Red, Cammy is a skilled combatant in the field of close-quarters combat, utilizing sweeping attacks first and foremost. Supplementing her training is an array of techniques of her own, such as the Spiral Arrow, in which Cammy dives through the air feet-first while rotating her body like a drill; or the Hooligan Combination, where Cammy vaults through the air while curled into a ball, opening several possibilities for Cammy to link her attacks together. While Cammy has other techniques, like the Cannon Spike and Cannon Strike kicks, as well as some fraction of M. Bison's Psycho Power infused with her thanks to being his clone, some of her greatest potential lies with her EX and super moves. Such examples of these are with her Cross Stinger Assault, a barrage of midair kicks culminating with an enhanced Spiral Arrow, as well as her Cammy Quick Combination, triggered as a counterattack against an opponent which sees the Delta Red commando trap her foe in a series of grapples and snapping maneuvers which breaks their neck twice over.

Between her training in expansive organizations and carrying on the legacy of M. Bison, Cammy is a foe both strong and tough all the same. The former Doll is an expert knife-thrower and tough enough to survive not just a fall from a plane in mid-flight, but even a punch from the boxer Balrog, notorious for murdering an elephant with a single blow carrying over ten thousand pounds of force. Though even still, Cammy, experienced as she may be, is not a perfect combatant. Her own experience with Psycho Power is limited, only accesible during times of emotional distress, and even her own normal fare can be a hindrance, disabling her should she miss her moves. But Cammy has kept these problems in line; her reputation would be unearned otherwise.

Cammy White: You can skip the trip down memory lane. (removes sunglasses) Tell me who you want me to kill.

Having given Cammy her due, the hosts begin to discuss someone else, Sonya Blade, member of the United States Special Forces, courtesy of her father's inspiration. Part of a special ops unit tasked with retrieving the cyborg mercenary Kano, Sonya's operations led her to a fighting competition that introduced to her fantastic creatures and unearthly realms; this would be her first experience with Mortal Kombat, a fighting tournament pit between dimensions whom send champions out to do battle for the right to protect or invade other realms. As Sonya learned more about the dimensional conqueror Shao Kahn, she aided the defenders of Earthrealm against his forces, becoming one of the few of Earthrealm's survivors after the tournament, the other being action movie star Johnny Cage, with whom Sonya would eventually wed and bear a daughter to.

Cassandra Cage has much to live up to, if her mother is any indication. Sonya's training in kenpo and taekwondo predominantly emphasize speed and agility, with which she uses in tandem with weapons and special forces equipment; these range from kali sticks, garrote wire, and various grenades to a high-tech bracelet which fires lasers and is the control system to a personal attack drone. As should be expected, Sonya has additional means of finishing her foes for good, known as Fatalities. Several of Sonya's own Fatalities consist of some manner of blowing deadly kisses, which can burn the opponent alive, crush them into paste, slice them in half, or cause them to vomit profusely, but beyond those, the special forces operative is also capable of tearing others in half by gripping them with her thighs and spreading her legs apart, easily justified by how Sonya can punch a steel anvil in half with over 90 thousand tons of force.

With all her experience and equipment, Sonya has proven herself to be a formidable adversary. She has been shown facing ninjas and demons alike with exceptional proficiency, and has decades of know-how thanks to her training. That said, even those decades are not enough to make up for all her faults. Her short temper can lead her into problems for both herself and her comrades, and her more technologically enhanced devices can be used against her should her foe be aware of it. Some credit must be given to Sonya, though, for her commitment to ensuring Earthrealm's safety, and her talent in fulfilling that commitment.

Kurtis Stryker: We need a strategic plan of attack.
Sonya Blade: I got one: kombat time! (leaps over a barricade and charges at Lin Kuei robots)

Both sides have been given a proper rundown, and the time for blood fast approaches. It's time for a death battle!

The final fleeting moments of a gunfight, located in an army field, sees Kano, cyborg mercernary of the Black Dragons, fleeing a warehouse, AK-47 in tow. From the warehouse's rooftop, Delta Red operative Cammy White spots Kano fleeing, and introduces herself with a flying kick straight to the chest. As Cammy updates her superiors, out of the warehouse comes one of Earthrealm's heroic defenders, Sonya Blade. As the American-borne commando crushes Kano's head in a single stomp, Cammy warns Sonya that her meddling will be met with consequences, which Sonya sardonically belittles.

FIGHT!

Sonya takes the first move in the fight, a laser blast from her bracelet just high enough for Cammy to dodge under with a Spiral Arrow, closing the distance to let the pair engage in a battle of hand-to-hand, Sonya quickly gaining the upper hand and catching Cammy in a series of blows. But the former Doll is quicker still to land on her feet, sending kicks and punches that fail to do much damage to the special forces general blocking them. As Cammy goes for a leaping approach, she soon finds herself ensnared between Sonya's legs and hurled backwards. The dimensional protector takes Kano's decapitated corpse and uses it as an improvised projectile, Cammy evading it and returning fire with a wooden crate; unfortunately for her, Sonya has come prepared, deactivating the cloaking mechanism on her attack drone, the Delta Red's shocked expression justified as the drone's missiles destroy the crate, topped off with smarmy banter from Sonya.

The fight turns to Sonya's favor, rushing Cammy down and administering a brutal melee assault, M. Bison's former vessel helpless to defend, until a straight punch gives her the opening to let loose her Psycho Power. In comparison to the plethora of attacks laid onto her, needs only three punches and a kick to have her first real advantage of the battle, knocking Sonya into a crate, trapped in its explosion. Cammy's ensuing stance is justified, for afterwards, Sonya activates her drone, but the British commando is quicker to react this time, throwing a combat knife that malfunctions the drone. Though not to as great an extent as lady White would hope, as the drone seems to be in stable enough condition to reliably open machine gun fire on the Delta Red agent.

Though deftly Cammy may dodge the rounds, Sonya, watching the action unfold from behind yet another crate, lobs a stun grenade in Cammy's direction. The ex-Doll can only piece together what the object is, not react to it, detonating and crippling her with electricity, that, in turn, gives the drone its own opening to riddle her with gunfire, before the drone finally control in full, spiraling into an oil barrel, the ensuing eruption engulfing the area in flames. Cammy, staring at the droplets of her blood dripping onto the pavement, is hoisted from the neck by Sonya, who is given the order to "finish her!"

Sonya quickly makes good on the demand, throwing a straight jab that shatters Cammy's rib cage, a sweeping kick that breaks her left humerus, and an uppercut that crushes her jaw and sends her skyward, agonized yells from the Delta Red punctuating each. On the descent, M. Bison's former vessel is trapped between the thighs of Johnny Cage's ex-wife, her squirming motions paid no heed as, with a final shriek of terror, Cammy is ripped in half as her captor splits her legs apart. In the ensuing rain of blood, Sonya ends the battle with an aside comment, as if to belittle her now-deceased adversary for wasting her efforts.

K.O.!

Cammy's lifeless body is pulverized moments later, as, after stuffing Kano's remains into the trunk of her car, Sonya rides out of the base, making sure to run the British cadaver over. While Cammy has the advantage in speed and agility, the hosts admit, Sonya outshines her in many more fields. Whilst Cammy has taken on a figure that leads entire hordes in M. Bison, Sonya has done so, not only against far more powerful foes, but even fighting multiple such entities concurrently. In addition, Sonya has a decade of experience over Cammy, protecting Earthrealm from both its own mundane threats and the pan-dimensional species seeking to invade it all that time, giving her an additional edge in terms of the manner of foes she can face and adapt to in comparison to Cammy's mere experience with Delta Red. To add on to this, while Cammy has been shown to take a blow capable of killing an elephant, Sonya's feat of breaking a solid steel anvil once again eclipses anything her foes' durability had to offer. And as if all this weren't enough, Cammy's experience with dodging projectiles failed her when dealing with them from multiple angles, as the case was with Sonya. As excellent and well-honed both female commandos are, Cammy is disadvantaged too far without enough ways to make up for her shortcomings.

Boomstick: Looks like Cammy's only "half" the woman Sonya is.
Wizard: The winner is Sonya Blade!

Next time on Death Battle...

Cammy vs. Sonya contains examples of:

  • Half the Man He Used to Be: It's noted that one of Sonya's fatalities involves gripping an opponent between her legs and splitting them to tear the hapless victim in two; it's the same fate that befalls Cammy.
  • Oh, Crap!: A recurring reaction of Cammy's whenever the drone appears.
  • Side Bet: Wiz and Boomstick seem to have set one; namely five dollars on if Boomstick can go through the whole episode without bringing up Cammy's ample posterior. He can't.
  • Worth It: Boomstick's reaction to losing the aforementioned Side Bet.
