Recap / Darkwing Duck S 2 E 12 A Brush With Oblivion

Go To

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Despite everything he's encountered throughout his careernote , Darkwing is initially skeptical of Honker's claim of seeing Splatter Phoenix jump into a painting. He changes his tune when he meets her in person.
  • Art Initiates Life: Splatter Phoenix has some kind of Applied Phlebotinum that could both bring her paintings to life and insert living people (including herself) into paintings, where they could then move from one painting to another. She uses this to steal the smile right off The Mona Lisa.
  • Art Shift: The animation style changes when the characters enter paintings through Splatter Phoenix's powers.
  • Captain Obvious:
(Darkwing runs into a fake door)
Launchpad: That door's not real, D.W.
  • Cartoon Bomb: Splatter Phoenix laments having to create one of these, as it doesn't fit with her definition of True Art.
Splatter Phoenix: [To] resort to making a (Beat) cartoon bomb!
  • Cassandra Truth: Nobody but Gosalyn believes Honker when he says he saw Splatter Phoenix in the paintings and that he didn't steal the paintings.
  • Denied Food as Punishment: When Herb grounds Honker, one of things he lists as forbidden is food. It's only after Binkie pipes up does he realize what he's saying.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Honkey being grounded for supposedly lying seems a tad excessive.
  • Grounded Forever: When Honker is held responsible for an art theft that was actually committed by Splatter Phoenix, his parents ground him in his room. His father makes a list of things Honker isn't allowed to have, including going out, having friends over, watching television, and sunlight, food, and water. His wife points out that those last few items are a bit excessive. Later, Herb grounds Honker for life as soon as he's bailed out of jail, only to change it to ten years when Binkie complains.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Tank has a surprising Pet the Dog moment where he's the only one who sticks up for Honker when he's blamed for Splatter Phoenix's crimes, and even helps him escape from the house after their parents ground him. Then after Honker's gone he immediately proceeds to tattle on him to Herb and Binkie, showing he helped Honker out just so he could get him in further trouble.
