Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 5 Apes Of Wrath

Go To

S.H.U.S.H. sends Darkwing, Launchpad and Gosalyn to Africa to find the missing Dr. Beatrice Bruté, the famous anthropologist. Darkwing discovers that Major Trenchrot is planning to open a vacation villa for villains.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: One of the female gorillas decides she likes Launchpad, much to his annoyance.
  • Angry Collar Grab: Darkwing jumps on the gorilla's chest and grabs him around where an anthropomorphic animal's collar would be as he interrogates him about where Gosalyn is.
  • Banana Peel: Darkwing slips on one at the end of the episode. He even lampshades they had to do that joke sometime.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The primate punch. The punch initially appears at a friendly gathering, where it causes Darkwing extreme pain. Later, he thinks of using coconuts full of it as bombs to attack Trenchrot's headquarters.
  • Evil All Along: For the first half of the episode, Darkwing thought that Major Trenchrot was an innocent man whose bananas were stolen by gorillas. It's only after he sees that the boxes are really full of weapons does he realize he's been working for a villain.
  • Gargle Blaster: The gorillas' "primate punch" is literally explosive.
  • Gilligan Cut: Gosalyn wants to go on the trip but Drake won't let her. So she holds her breath until she goes red in the face, with Drake saying that he is unmoved, unshaken, un-. We don't find out what the last one is because they cut to Gosalyn, DW, and Launchpad in the Thunderquack flying over an island.
  • Going Native: After spending so much time among the gorillas, Dr. Beatrice has ended up getting absorbed into their way of life.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Darkwing tells Launchpad to remain calm, then yells at the gorilla to tell him where Gosalyn is. He fully admits that he's being hypocritical.
Darkwing: (To the audience) Okay, so I don't practice what I preach. I'm a parent; I can get away with it.
  • Killer Gorilla: At first, it looked like the gorillas were the villains stealing from Trenchrot who appears to be an innocent man. It turns out to be a subversion; the gorillas are actually friends of Dr. Beatrice, and Trenchrot is the real villain.
  • Lover Tug of War: A variant; Launchpad gets pulled by the gorilla who fell for him and her boyfriend both at once, with the female gorilla trying to hang on to him and the male trying to get rid of him as a rival.
  • Most Definitely Not Accompanying Us: Gosalyn is eager to go on the expedition, but Darkwing tells her she can't come.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Darkwing almost gets eaten by a crocodile upon arriving on the island.
  • Running Gag: Darkwing gets hit by coconuts several times during the episode.
  • Use Your Head: Subverted. When facing one of the gorillas, Darkwing says, "Well, you know what they say: if at first you don't succeed, use your head!" He charges head-first, but the gorilla is so tough that he stops him flat just by standing there. "And if that doesn't work, use something bigger!"
