Recap / Dark S 3 E 1 Deja Vu

Go To

In 2019, Jonas emerges from the cave into a strange but familiar world: the town of Winden, reeling from the disappearance of a young boy.

Tropes:

  • Alternate Universe: Jonas discovers that the other Martha brought him to an alternate universe.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Alt!Wöller is missing his left arm rather than his eye.
  • Berserk Button: Mentioning Hannah's name in front of Martha, due to her causing their parents' divorce.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Martha wakes up from her dream this way.
  • Epigraph: The episode starts with a quote by Arthur Schopenhauer:
A man can do what he wants, but he cannot will what he wants.
  • Da Chief: Ulrich is the police chief of Winden, instead of Charlotte.
  • Eye Scream: Helge is missing an eye instead of an ear.
  • For Want Of A Nail: The alternate universe is where Jonas doesn't exist due to Mikkel never traveling to 1986.
  • Have We Met Yet?: Stranger!Jonas seems to forget about meeting Alt!Martha when he was young.
  • Immediate Sequel: Season 3 begins exactly where the Cliffhanger from the previous season left off.
  • In Spite of a Nail: The apocalypse is predicted to happen in 2019, not June 2020 in Adam's World.
    • Ulrich cheats on his wife, like in the first world.
    • Helge is still involved in the kidnappings.
    • Erik Obendorf is still missing.
    • Mads still dies, and his body ends up in the bunker in 2019.
  • Killed Off for Real: Bernd Doppler is killed by the 3 unknown people.
  • Randomly Reversed Letters: The title sequence shows "DARK" with reversed D and R.
  • Removed from the Picture: Ulrich has been ripped from his family photo since he and Katharina divorced and he married Hannah.
  • Suddenly Voiced: In the alternate timeline Franziska is deaf instead of Elisabeth.
  • Super Prototype: Martha's golden time machine can be used to travel to any point in time, as well as between the universes.
  • Title Drop: Jonas tells Martha that she already knows him and that them meeting is like a deja-vu.
  • Trash the Set: The Unknown burn down Sic Mundus's underground lair in 1987.
  • Visual Pun: In this "mirror universe" everything is flipped left to right, but writing on signs, boxes, etc. remains readable. The Nielson and Kahnwald families have also switched houses, though this could be from arrangements after the divorce. (This is not the typical Mirror Universe trope, since morality has not been switched.)
  • What Year Is It?: Jonas first asks Peter what day it is, and then what year it is.
  • When It All Began: The alternate Martha brings Jonas to November 4, 2019.
