Recap / Curb Your Enthusiasm S1 E1 "The Pants Tent"

Go To

Larry's baggy new pants create awkward misunderstandings among Larry, Cheryl (Cheryl Hines), and her friend (Robin Ruzan). A movie-theater argument with a female 'stranger' (Sofia Milos) leads to tensions between Larry and his best friend (Richard Lewis). Larry jokingly refers to Cheryl as "Hitler" during a car speakerphone conversation with Jeff (Jeff Garlin) and his attempts to hide it from her—and to appease Jeff's Holocaust-sensitive parents (Mina Kolb, Louis Nye) — backfire disastrously. Kathy Griffin makes a cameo appearance.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Pervert:
    • When Larry tries scooching into his theater aisle, Larry gets into an argument with a lady who was in the way, leading to her accusing him of looking at her rack.
    • Nancy mistakes the titular pants tent for an erection.
  • Cassandra Truth: Cheryl invites Nancy over to clear things up when she thinks that Larry's pants tent was her accidentally giving him an erection. No matter how thoroughly they explain the situation, she refuses to believe otherwise.
  • Political Overcorrectness: Larry makes an offhanded joke about Hitler to Jeff while his parents were listening. They repeatedly demand that Jeff drops him as a client for it.
  • Show Within a Show: The movie Larry goes to is called A Hard Nut to Crack with Dustin Hoffman.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Jeff has a cousin who was gay, Jewish and survived Nazi Germany, hence why his parents are sensitive about the "Hitler" comment.
