Tropes in this episode
- The Bus Came Back: Prentiss returns to help save JJ and Cruz. This is a nice reversal from when JJ guest-starred in Season 6 to save her from Doyle.
- Convenient Miscarriage: Well, JJ certainly doesn't consider it convenient. She clearly grieves it. But it explains why we never heard about any pregnancy happening while she was gone in season six.
- Foreshadowing: Prentiss is the one who delivers the opening quote, foreshadowing her guest appearance.
- Fish out of Water: JJ when she arrives in Afghanistan.
- Gondor Calls for Aid: The team calls Prentiss in from London to help.
- Internal Reveal: The team learns that JJ and Cruz worked together in Afghanistan. JJ's husband Will already knew, though.
- It's Personal: Hastings organized the attack on the convoy that is the reason why JJ miscarried. She's pissed.
- Red Herring: It looks like Cruz is involved in it for a while, but he's innocent. It's actually the CIA agent Hastings, who was thought to be dead.
- Unexpected Character:
- The person briefing JJ in Afghanistan is... Erin Strauss. Which makes sense, as it happened around Season 6, and Strauss only died in Season 8.
- Prentiss delivers the opening quote.
- Whole Episode Flashback: This episode has several flashbacks to JJ's time with the state department.
