A Nevada town is pissed that a serial killer has been murdering local women on and off whenever he passes through. He removes the lower right rib of each of his victims. A local woman who was spared by him when she was young because she forgot to be afraid of him is convinced he'll come back, and though it looks like she is panicking about that, she desperately wants to see him again. He kidnaps a bus full of children and leave them in the desert, and will only tell Gideon where if he lets him escape with Jane. Part 1 of 2.
This episode provides examples of:
- Batman Gambit: Must have been one, since Frank felt so sure the children he kidnapped wouldn't die of exposure.
- Creepy Souvenir: Frank hangs windchimes made of human rib bones on Jane's porch.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Crazy Jane.
- Face Death with Dignity: Subverted. The only way to survive being attacked by this serial killer is to do this.
- How We Got Here: The episode is framed by a discussion between Frank and Gideon relating the investigation that lead him to the café they are now sitting in.
- Insane Troll Logic: Jane argues that it's okay for the situation to be insane, because "love is insanity".
- Meaningful Name:
- Frank discusses this concept, theorizing that parents name their kids according to it. He does not mention that his last name Breitkopf is German for "big head".
- Frank claims his given name is derived from "some kind of spear", but it means "French" and by extension "free" or "honest".
- He gets Jason right, though. It does mean "healer".
- Stupid Sexy Flanders: Frank tells Morgan that if he had Morgan's looks, his life would be much easier.
- Vagueness Is Coming: A local lady has fits screaming that "he" is coming back.
- Would Not Hurt A Child: Frank claims to be this trope… after he's kidnapped a bus full of them and left them in a place no one can find in the Nevada desert.
