Auf Wiedersehen!

Chief Ripley orders Carmen and the player to go to Bierburg, a town in Germany currently in the middle of its Oktoberfest celebration, so they can stop the Promethians before the cult can launch another attack. Unfortunately, they only find the body of famous actor Hans Vogel impaled on a cuckoo clock puppet pole in the middle of the village square.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Murder: Subverted: Johan thinks he accidentally killed his brother with an arrow when they were young, but it's later revealed that the true killer was Hans, who convinced Johan he was the responsible to avoid charges. Played straight with Hans, though, as he's the one who accidentally shot Christophe during their hunting trip.
  • Albinos Are Freaks: Brother Klaus is an albino and, even though you met him before, he shows his true colors in this case as the mastermind behind Hans' murder.
  • All for Nothing: Johan killed Hans because he thought Hans was going to reveal the secret about Johan killing his own brother, but not only Hans was going to reveal an entirely different thing on television, Johan wasn't actually responsible for his brother's death in the first place.
  • Ass Shove: Lethal example with the victim, who was killed by being impaled with a pole from rectum to chest.
  • Big Eater: Gunther Fritz isn't the current National Sausage Eating Champion for nothing. The victim was also such a big eater that he managed to defeat Gunther and receive this year's trophy, though Gunther makes clear there weren't hard feelings and he wouldn't kill him for that.
  • The Bully: During his childhood, Hans used to bully Brother Klaus for being an albino, which led to bitterness between both of them.
  • Call-Back: Brother Klaus reappears as a suspect.
  • Cult Defector: Hans used to be a member of the Promethian Cult until he discovered how far they were willing to go to accomplish their goals, and attempted to expose them on television during an interview. Unfortunately, this led to Brother Klaus convivincing Johan to kill him.
  • Curse Cut Short:
Elliot: <Player's Name>, remember that postcard you had me check out earlier? The one sent to that famous guy, found dead with a pole shoved up his
    Carmen: Yeah, we know!
  • Dead Guy on Display: Hans' body was left on the public village square.
  • Dead Man Writing: During the Additional Investigation, you find a video recording from Hans explaining about the Promethians and their plans, though he doesn't get to tell us the whole picture.
Hans: I recently discovered a secret about the Promethians. A secret so terrible I can no longer be a member of this cult.
The secret is that the Promethians are planning to attack! We are all in danger! Europe as we know it will be destroyed! It will be-
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Mayor Nagel says this word by word when you find her drunk in the forest, since Hans had promised he would fund an Oktoberfest theme park on her town before he withdrew his support at last minute.
  • Evil Laugh: Brother Klaus maniacally laughs before smoking out of the interrogation room.
  • Fan Disservice: Downplayed since we don't see him from the waist down, but Gunther Fritz is an old, 300 lb. man walking totally in the nude. Carmen doesn't hesitate in calling him nasty.
  • Fat Slob: Gunther appears with sausage grease stains on his mouth and chest.
  • Fictional Province: The case takes place in the fictional German town of Bierburg, which is mostly based on Rothenburg.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Carmen and Chief Ripley discuss about Hans Vogel moments before you find his body.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: Johan calls Hans a "drecksau"note  when you inform him he was the one who killed his brother.
  • Formerly Fit: Gunther tells you that, despite looking fat and useless, he was actually in the military before, implying this.
  • Frame-Up: Hans convinced Johan that he had killed his own brother when in fact it was Hans himself who accidentally killed him with a missed arrow during their hunting trip.
  • Gratuitous German: Since the case takes place in Germany, most of your suspects add German words to their speech when talking to you. Angela also greets you in German when you speak to her.
Gretl: My love is gone! Now, I will have the kummerspeck!note
Carmen: Yeah, I don’t know what that means… so, I’ll leave you to that.
  • Haunted Castle: One of the crime scenes is the courtyard of an abandoned castle that is said to be haunted.
  • He Knows Too Much: Brother Klaus (and by extension the Promethians) ordered Hans' murder because he was going to expose them and their plans to the public.
  • Horror Doesn't Settle for Simple Tuesday: The case takes place in the middle of an Oktoberfest celebration.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The victim was impaled on a pole.
  • Improvised Weapon: The murder weapon is a giant cuckoo clock.
  • Karma Houdini: For 15 years, Hans remained unpunished for accidentally killing Johan's brother, convincing him that he was the one who did it until Angela discovers Christophe was killed by a left-handed person, something Johan isn't but Hans was.
  • Love Hurts: Gretl loved Hans and was convinced he loved her too, which was a lie since he barely knew her.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Gunther Fritz, one of your suspects, is a nude tourist currently staying on town for the local sausage eating contest.
  • Oktoberfest: The case takes place in a little rustic German town in the midst of Oktoberfest, and Gunther Fritz, one of your suspects, is a fat nude tourist who loves beer and is the current National Sausage Eating Champion.
  • Only One Name: Mayor Nagel's first name wasn't revealed.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Carmen's reaction upon seeing Gunther is asking him to put some pants on.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Hans was planning to do an interview with the mayor of Bierburg, claiming he was aiming to expose a "big secret" on TV (which was going to be about the Promethians), but Brother Klaus convinced Johan that Hans was going to expose how he accidentally killed his brother instead, which led to Johan killing Hans.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Brother Klaus has red eyes and he's the one responsible for Han's murder.
  • Revisiting the Cold Case: During the Additional Investigation, you revisit the accidental murder of Christophe Schnee, where you find his body and demonstrate that it wasn't Johan who killed him, but Hans.
  • Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: Gretl claimed Hans and her were in deep love, but Marina manages to deduce that she's suffering from Erotomania, making said claim invalid.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Hans Vogel and Gretl Beutelspracher are a reference to Hansel and Gretel.
    • Johann Schnee resembles Thor.
    • Bierburg is a parody of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
    • In the Spanish translation, this case is titled "Hasta La Vista, Baby".
  • Smoke Out: Brother Klaus disappears from the interrogation room after his arrest by using a smoke bomb.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: When you stumble upon the killer's radio, Elliot discovers that it was tuned to a German folk music station at the time of the murder.
Carmen: Wait, so our killer murdered the victim while listening to German folk music?! Who does that?!
  • Stalker with a Crush: Gretl had been stalking Hans because she was in love with him, up to flying to Los Angeles to meet with him without his consent, which led to him filling a restraining order against Gretl.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Downplayed. While Johan still killed Hans in cold blood to protect his secret, the extreme guilt he was feeling due to believing he had accidentally killed his brother (when in fact it was Hans who did it) plus the Promethians' manipulation means there were other factors other than pure selfishness behind his crime.
  • Tap on the Head: Hans was first knocked out with a beer mug before being impaled on the clock.
  • That Man Is Dead: Brother Klaus claims that Klaus Weissmann, his real name, is dead, since he has "transcended to the higher order of divinity."
  • Trouble Entendre: Before escaping, Brother Klaus claims he and the Promethians are going to a place where money has no value, which allows Chief Ripley to deduce they will be in Greece (which, during the game's time, was currently going through the Greek government-debt crisis).
  • United Europe: The Referendum is mentioned again during a local news report about citizens of Germany voting "yes" on it.
  • The Unreveal: During Hans' Dead Man Writing, it seems like he's going to reveal the Promethians' master plan, but said recording gets cut short before he can say more.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Johan and Hans were best friends, but Johan went to the military and Hans left for Los Angeles, so they grew apart.
  • You Are Too Late: By the time you arrive to the town to stop the Promethians from performing another assassination, Hans has been killed by them.
Carmen: We got here early, but it’s still too late!
