Recap / Criminal Case Supernatural Investigations Case 12 Dead Heat

Go To

The hunters follow a werewolf pack from Colorado to Utah to investigate them further, suspecting one of them to be working with Demons. Luke offers the player to come to Lake Bonneville to get their bearings in Utah, where they see a time trail event occur on the salt bed.... Than racer Jerry McKenzie's car explodes into purple flames, killing the poor guy during his first race ever, in front of everybody attending.

Tropes:

  • An Arm and a Leg: You find Jerry's hand before the rest of him, mainly because of the normal cops getting there before you.
  • The Bus Came Back: Lily Karam and Maylin Park are back for this case, the latter haven moved with her daughter from Grimsbrough to Utah, and considering what happened there, it was probably for the better. And also, Zander's back.
  • Cursed Item: A jar that had certain things in it that caused a killing curse in the form of Jerry's car blowing up while he's still in it. Thankfully, Felix points out that the killer knew what they were doing when making the jar, revealing they know how to cast spells.
  • Every Car Is a Pinto: Well, there wasn't anything wrong with the car itself that caused it to burst into purple flames... It was rather what was IN the car that made it explode like a Pinto.
  • Deal with the Devil: Ralph, Jerry's uncle and the one who made the spell jar that killed him believed he done this in his dreams when he was a little boy, and was convinced it was the case when he won every race he was in after that, than when Jerry was registered for the race that was his only, misfortunes happened to Ralph and an old lady was staring at him at the grocery store. This convinced him to make the jar. Chief Arrow tells him that this isn't the case, it was his subconscious.
  • Karma Houdini: The victim's uncle, Ralph is simply let go by the Supernatural Hunters, who can't turn him in to the cops since there's no evidence any normal court would believe in that points to him. But, he has to live with the fact he killed his nephew for basically no reason other than something he imagined.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Ralph when he realizes he killed his nephew over something he imagined doing when he was little.
  • Police Are Useless: Well, the ones in this case aren't portrayed as incompetent, but obviously due to the supernatural nature of the case, they are more of a hinderance here. Thankfully George has them grant you access to Jerry's body.
  • The Punishment Is the Crime: The supernatural hunters allow Ralph to walk free, figuring the guilt over murdering his nephew for nothing is punishment enough. Also, “murder by cursing a car” wouldn’t really hold up in court.
  • Spell Book: You find one of these, and it belongs to Maylin from all people, she says she just burns sage occasionally and thanks the four winds.
  • Vehicular Sabotage: Sorta, the car itself wasn't tampered with, but the killer snuck in a curse jar that later made it explode into purple flames, killing Jerry.
