Jones: What a great day to play golf, don't you think, <Player's Name>? It costs a small fortune, but everyone in Maple Heights plays it, and we have to blend in!

The body of golfer Tony Webb is found during a golf match between you and Jones, buried in the field and with a golf ball stuck in his mouth.

Tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Tony's caddy, Danny Doyle.
  • Always Someone Better: Tony was this to Harold Knight, always being ahead of him when playing golf. It's the reason why he killed him.
  • Animal Nemesis: Danny has been obsessed with killing a gopher living in the golf course ever since it stole one of Tony's golf balls and he decided to lash out on Danny. Fortunately, you and Jones manage to find it and release it far away from Danny.
  • Asshole Victim: Tony was a blackmailing, abusive, and cheating womanizer who had little respect for anyone, which ends up with no one being saddened for his death.
  • Blackmail: Tony had been blackmailing both Zack and Laura, threatening the former with false rumors about how he stole the idea for Friendnet and the latter with convincing her sponsors to leave her if she broke up with him.
  • Book Dumb: As we learn in this case, Jones doesn't know how chromosomes work.
Jones: Hm... So, we're looking for a killer with XY chromosomes? Any chance it's the proof of a horrible disease which left them conveniently disfigured?
Grace: Uh, Jones... if having XY chromosomes is a disease, then you caught it at birth.
  • Broken Pedestal: Martha admired Tony and even made him the face of her campaign before she found out how rotten he was.
  • Buried Alive: Tony was buried until only his mouth remained outside the ground, then his killer swung a golf ball into it, suffocating him to death.
  • Call-Back: Martha Price and Zack Holden reappear as suspects.
  • The Casanova: We learn that Tony was this, with Martha calling him a womanizer and his girlfriend Laura telling you he was cheating on her with multiple women at once.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Stuart O'Neil is mentioned, being the one who has been sending love letters to Martha.
    • Cathy makes an appearance after being absent since Case 41, hacking Zack's account as a form of protest because her complaints about Friendnet's security flaws weren't being addressed.
    • Lola Vallez delivers you an invitation for her wedding next week.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Martha mentions her daughter before she appears in Case 48.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Jones talks about who Tony Webb is seconds before you come across his body.
  • Golf Clubbing: Harold knocked Tony out cold with his golf club before burying him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Harold was envious of Tony's golfing success and how he continued being a star despite his bad reputation, so he killed him to steal the title as the #1 Golfer.
Jones: For God's sake, Harold, it's just golf! It's just some sport, not a matter of life and death!
Harold: Maybe for you! But I knew the only way to become number one was to kill him.
  • Improvised Weapon: Not everyday you see someone being purposefully killed with a golf ball.
  • Nervous Wreck: Danny Doyle, Tony's caddie, is this the first time you meet him, since he's had to deal with Tony's abuse for a long time. When you talk to him again, he's far more relaxed and happy.
  • Pulled from Your Day Off: You and Jones discover Tony's body during your day off at the golf course.
  • Serious Business: Golf is this for Harold, up to the point he's willing to kill someone if that means he's got to be the #1 at it.
Judge Hall: You killed someone in cold blood! You watched over him as he died, without trying to help him! And for what? For some stupid sport tournament?
Harold: GOLF IS NOT STUPID! Golf is everything! Golf is life, and I'm leading it! Me! Alone! FOREVER!
  • Shout-Out:
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: Martha Price does an interview calling Tony "a womanizer, a cheater, and an insult to all the hard-working men and women of Grimsborough" while also calling his death a blessing. It's the reason why she becomes a suspect.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Jones really ramps up these in this case, saying things such as "holy socks", "holy guacamole", or "holy golfing maggots", among other things.
