Recap / Crazy Ex-Girlfriend S1E9: "I'm Going to the Beach with Josh and His Friends!"

Go To

Women gotta stick together,
Do everything we can,
So if some weird troll named Rebecca moves here from New York and is all up on my boyfriend,
I'm gonna... lend her a helping hand!

Written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, directed by Kenny Ortega. Original airdate 1/25/2015.

"In an attempt to impress join Josh's friend group, Rebecca rents a party bus to take the group to the beach. On the trip, Rebecca learns more about her new friends than she expected and makes a surprising revelation herself."

"I Have Friends (reprise)" (sung by Rachel Bloom)

"Women Gotta Stick Together" (sung by Gabrielle Ruiz)

  • Artistic License – Music: Type 1. Gabrielle Ruiz's right-hand strumming is entirely in rhythm (as you'd expect from a trained dancer) but when the chords change, the fingers of her left hand don't move.
  • Condescending Compassion: What the entire song is about.
Some girls are born tall and thin,
And some are short and fat.
    This girl smells like sausages,
But there's nothing wrong with that!
  • Female Misogynist: There doesn't seem to be a single woman who Valencia actually likes.
  • Friendship Song: Parodied. Valencia sings in general terms about how all women should be friendly and supportive towards one another, while subtly (and unsubtly) insulting all of the specific women that she meets.
  • Pastiche: Of folk-rock.
  • Slut-Shaming:
So let's all spread this message
    Like Caitlin spreads disease.
'Cause a change is coming faster
Than Ashley drops to her knees.

"West Covina (Reprise II)" (sung by Vincent Rodriguez III and Rachel Bloom)

Tropes in this episode:

  • Bottle Episode: The majority of the episode takes place on the party bus Rebecca rents.
  • Brick Joke: Darryl and his bean dip eventually make it to the party.
  • Cringe Comedy: Rebecca's incredibly uncomfortable pole dance in the party bus may be the most cringeworthy moment in the entire first season. And it's still hilarious.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Darryl trying to join up with Rebecca and company is largely due to his desire and inability to make friends.
  • Love Epiphany: Rebecca finally admits to herself and Paula that she's in love with Josh after all of this.
