"Geez! Can't a girl concur with a hypothesis around here?"

A Plot: Brent's usual snarkiness when dealing with customers comes back to bite him when one customer, a radio DJ, creates the character of "Dog River Dave" to give him a taste of his own medicine.

B Plot: After being forced into sending food to Emma, Lacey starts up a delivery service at the Ruby, using Hank as her delivery man. The service proves too popular, and Lacey finds herself lonely at the diner.

C Plot: To protest the lack of a raise in the police budget, Karen and Davis begin "working to rule", meaning they will only do the bare minimum amount of work required for the job. Unfortunately for them, said bare minimum is way more work than they normally do.

Tropes Referenced:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Oscar informs Fitzy that the cops are working to rule, which started "because" Lacey started delivering at the Ruby. Fitzy makes a very serious phone call that is teased as being to the cops, but is actually to order a cheeseburger and milkshake for delivery.
  • Bothering by the Book: Davis and Karen decide to "work to rule" and do the bare minimum required in the job description as a form of protest. When they tell the mayor they're working "by the book", the mayor happily gives them a copy of the rule book, which is an encyclopedia-sized tome. They end up doing more work than ever, so they decide to go back to work normally.
  • Call-Back:
  • Cannot Convey Sarcasm: Inverted. Wanda has trouble not conveying sarcasm, and a big pet peeve of hers is people thinking she is being sarcastic when she actually isn't. Due to being the biggest Deadpan Snarker on the show, it's highly likely that the rest of the town just assumes that anything coming out of her mouth must be sarcasm.
  • Character Filibuster: In an off-camera example, when Lacey starts doing deliveries herself, she has Emma trapped in a long-winded conversation that Emma wants no part of.
Emma: I should get to this before I have to heat it up... for the second time....
  • Description Cut:
    Karen: So how'd it go?
Davis: Not good. No raise in the police operating budget this year. [Karen glares at him] Oh, don't look at me like that. I fought. I fought hard.
[Cut to Davis in the mayor's office]
Davis: So, can we have more money?
    Fitzy: No.
Davis: Yes sir, Mr. Mayor. [He walks out.]
  • Dumbass DJ: The DJ who creates Dog River Dave is a morning zoo host whose style of humour is completely juvenile and whose sound effects machine gets quite a workout. Particularly the fart button.
  • Failed a Spot Check: A handful of people can't seem to notice that Emma is sick. Including Brent. Multiple times.
  • Fictional Counterpart: The Regina-based rock radio station The Jackal is a stand-in for the real station The Wolf. In real life, the Jackal's call letters CJKL belong to a station in Kirkland Lake, Ontario.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The success of the Ruby's delivery service causes the diner itself to become deserted. Lacey begins regretting that she started it.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The only reason the DJ is teasing Brent on the radio is because Brent teased him when he stopped for gas.
  • Hypocrite: Both the DJ and Emma call Brent out for complaining about being made fun of when he makes fun of people all the time.
  • Hypocritical Humor: As Brent is complaining about being made fun of on the radio:
    Lacey: You are overreacting.
Josh: [from the kitchen] The mayor just called for delivery.
Lacey: This is the worst thing that's ever happened to me!
Wanda: Didn't you once find a raccoon in your sock drawer?
Lacey: This is the second worst thing that's ever happened to me!
  • Imagine Spot: Two in rapid succession:
Lacey: Hank, Emma called. She wants some soup delivered.
Hank: And you want me to watch over the place while you go?
Lacey: [Imagining the Ruby on fire] Well, no.
Hank: Oh. You want me to go deliver it to 'em?
Lacey: [Imagining the Leroy house on fire] That would be better.
  • Sidetracked by the Analogy:
Brent: I'm not enjoying being made fun of on the radio.
Lacey: You can dish it out, but you can't take it. What's good for the goose is not good for the gander.
Brent: Did you just call me a gander?
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Lacey's insistent words on the phone about her "just this once" delivery make it painfully obvious to everyone in the Ruby that Emma has already hung up.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Lacey finally kills the delivery service when she starts making the deliveries herself, since the only reason people wanted it in the first place was so they wouldn't have to put up with her conversation. Lacey never realizes this first or last, and is baffled as to why all of a sudden nobody wants delivery anymore.
Wanda: Maybe it's your people skills.
    Lacey: You being sarcastic?
    Wanda: Works either way.
  • Title Drop
  • Unwanted Assistance: Oscar and Hank throw eggs at the DJ to make him stop doing the Dog River Dave character, thinking they're doing a Brent a favour. However, Brent had just started to come around to the whole Dog River Dave thing after receiving advice from Emma. To make matters worse, the DJ replaces Dog River Dave with Wullerton Willy [spit].
  • Who Would Want to Watch Us?:
Brent: My life, a TV show? Who's gonna watch that?
Hank: Well, maybe if there were some really cool cameos.
Cindy Klassen: [walks onto the screen] Hi there! I'm six-time Olympic medallist Cindy Klassen!
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame:
Hank: There's that trademark Wanda sarcasm.
Wanda: See? Hank gets it. [realizing] Oh my God, Hank gets it.
