The prime suspect in the 1980 murder of Tommy Flanagan comes to the station and pleads to have the case reopened to prove his innocence. The team looks deeper into Tommy’s murder on the night the American Hockey Team defeated the Soviet team.

- Career-Ending Injury: Tommy's older brother Sean used to be a hockey star in Canada until a motorcycle crash injury ended his career.
- Chekhov's Gun: Dwight is shown giving Tommy a sugary alcohol drink, bragging about how effective it is at getting girls drunk. Later on, Dwight drugs Molly with it and rapes her.
- Child Of Rape: Molly became pregnant from Dwight's rape and had a daughter, who she gave away. She has no idea where the child ended up.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sean eventually had to get over his lost glory as a hockey star while Coach Heaton was impressed by Tommy's talent.
- Post-Support Regret: Tommy regrets his friendship with Dwight and tells him that everyone was right about him being a loser after Dwight is revealed to have raped Tommy's girlfriend Molly.
- Psychopathic Manchild: Dwight Barnes. To get back at his best friend for neglecting him, he drugged and raped Molly. He showed up at the ice rink to justify himself, stating "chicks like guys who step up and pull the trigger" and calling her a "sporty little slut". When Tommy punches him down and insults him, Dwight beats him to death with a hockey stick.
- Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Molly Heaton is raped offscreen by Dwight Barnes at a New Years Eve party.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Tommy gives one to Dwight after learning he raped Molly, calling him a tool and a loser.
- Stereotype Flip: It is suspected that Coach Heaton killed Tommy for getting his daughter Molly pregnant. In fact, he wanted her to keep the baby.
