Recap / Cold Case S 5 E 7 Worlds End

Go To

The skeleton of Audrey Metz, who went missing on October 30, 1938, the night of the infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast, is found buried in town, with evidence that she was strangulated.

Tropes:

  • Chekhov's Gun: The picture of the Metz family with their 1930 Packard automobile. Felton's alibi was that he and Dobber drove all night looking for Audrey when they heard on their car radio that the alien invasion was a hoax. Scotty is an expert with classic cars and realized that radios were installed on the Packard in 1932. Felton heard the news not on the road but at home, and there was where he killed Audrey.
  • Downer Ending: Dobber watches as his elderly father Felton is arrested for murdering his wife. Audrey's spirit appears to Will instead of to her son.
  • Dramatic Irony: Audrey’s first and last dance with Will was to the song “Always” by Frank Sinatra. Later, the same song played while her husband strangled her to death.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Robert heard his mom come home that night, but didn’t hear what happened next. He convinced himself it was a dream because he did not want to accept that his father could have hurt her.
Robert: I had to believe the world was a good place.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Felton killed Audrey when she confessed that she didn’t love him anymore.
  • Idle Rich: Will Paige was an inventor who was living off the residuals of his invention (whatever it is).
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Will. His wife wasn’t dead, but she had gotten a lobotomy, which of course meant she was as good as dead. When he met Audrey, he came alive again.
