- All for Nothing: In universe. Tammy, The Alcoholic, believed that she killed Greg during a hit and run, and has stayed sober ever since. After realizing that she didn't kill him, she is tempted to go back to drinking again.
- Driven to Suicide: Mel shoots himself while being cornered by the cops for Greg's murder.
- Foreshadowing: In the prologue, Mel's New Year's resolution for the millennium was "to have a family...kids and all", his wish is fulfilled when he leaves his wife for Susan and poisons Greg.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Mel grew tired of his marriage, and desired Greg's wife Susan. He poisoned Greg so he could marry Greg's widow.
- Jerkass: John Butler is pretty much hated by all of his neighbors for his abusive and misogynist attitude. He killed a neighbor's dog, cut down their trees, abused their children, and committed Insurance Fraud by paying Trevor to steal his own car.
- Millennium Bug:
- The episode takes place on New Year's Eve 1999 and New Year's Day 2000, Mel's ex-wife talks about planes crashing and the electricity malfunctioning at midnight on January 1, 2000.
- Scotty reveals that Elisa's grandmother was paranoid about the world coming to an end at midnight on New Year's Day 2000 and bought hams, potatoes and eggs in preparation, which Scotty, Elisa and her family had for brunch the next morning.
- Red Herring: Tammy and Trevor both confess to running Greg over on New Year's Eve 1999/New Year's Day 2000. Greg was already dead before he was hit by a car.
- Romancing the Widow: Mel ends up marrying Greg's widow after killing him. However since she never had any problems with Greg and never got any closure from his death, the marriage ends up failing.
