Recap / Code Lyoko S 1 E 1

Go To

Milly and Tamiya are doing a report on the school prom. They try to interview Sissi, who was prom queen last year, but she turns them down and makes fun of their age. Milly tries to ask Ulrich out, and he turns her down because he's going to the dance with Yumi. Upset, Milly storms off. In her room, she tells Tamiya that she hates everyone, unaware that X.A.N.A. is listening from her computer. When Milly tells her teddy bear that she wishes she were bigger and leaves it in the garden shed, X.A.N.A. possesses it and uses it to attack those who had made fun of her. It then increases the teddy bear's size to roughly two stories and sets it on the town. Since Ulrich had to protect the school and warn Yumi, it's up to Odd to go to Lyoko and help Aelita deactivate the tower protect the rest of the town from the rampaging teddy bear. After a return to the past, Milly asks Ulrich to the dance again, and Ulrich says yes, embarrassing Sissi.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Milly's teddy bear is turned giant and aggressive when XANA possesses it.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Ulrich tries to warn everyone from the giant teddy bear, everyone laughs it off except Jim as he was himself attacked by it.
Ulrich: Stop! Listen to what I have to say! You have all got to get out of here! We have to evacuate the gym. Now, keep calm. I’m not joking, this is serious. We are about to be attacked by a gigantic teddy bear!
    (Everyone laughs)
Jim: Ha! I knew it! I saw it too! I saw the giant teddy bear too!
  • Dumb Struck: Played with, as Jim after being attacked by the giant teddy bear, when questioned by principal Delmas about his sketched attacker, he only answers by quickly nodding frantically. He gets better later.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • Plenty considering it’s the first episode. Odd is depicted as an Experienced Protagonist character while on Lyoko and in general is shown to be reasonably intelligent. Jim lacks most of the humor he’d gain later plus he lets Ulrich off with a warning for not following dress code at the dance on the count of keeping good company. Jim would later find the entire gang’s activities suspicious if they even breathed funny, let alone dressed oddly.
    • English dub specific, but Milly sounds almost exactly like Yumi in this episode. It would take a while before Vocal Evolution would set in and Kirkland would make a better effort at making their voices distinct.
  • Fanservice: Two instances happen involving Sissi and Yumi:
    • The first one occurs where we the viewers see Sissi in her pink bra and panties, which quickly turns into Fan Disservice as Sissi becomes the XANA-possessed bear's first target due to her teasing Milly early in the episode.
    • The second one (which eventually gets used as Stock Footage later on) shows Yumi taking a traditional Japanese Furo Bath and is later seen with red panties on as she's getting dressed to go help Ulrich.
  • Homage: The episode's title "TeddyGozilla" is basically one to the Godzilla film series with the titular teddy bear itself even going on a Godzilla-like rampage in Paris throughout the episode (though thankfully it's limited to only Kadic's gymnasium rather than the entire city of Paris), the only major difference is that the bear lacks nuclear radiation (which is Godzilla's trademark). Even more notable as one of the Lyoko Warriors Yumi Ishiyama, is actually from Japan which Godzilla almost usually attacks (or sometimes defends) in his film series. note
  • Just in Time: The first of many instances where Aelita deactivates the tower with just seconds before something bad happens. In this case, the giant teddy bear almost crushes Ulrich, but Aelita enters the code, and the bear stops just above him.
  • Killer Teddy Bear: XANA possesses Milly's teddy bear and turns it into a giant monster in an attempt to try and kill the Lyoko Warriors.
  • High-School Dance: The plot starts with the cast helping set up the school's dance, which ultimately gets wrecked by the now Kaiju sized Teddy Bear.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Yumi sends a one-sentence one to Sissi. "I hope you're proud of yourself". Because of the Reset Button, the speech didn't stick.
  • Sealed Evil in a Teddy Bear: XANA takes control of Milly's teddy bear and unleashes it on Paris's suburbs before attacking the Kadic Gymnasium where the Prom dance is being held.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Odd's shooting the roachsters causes the last one to fall over the cliff plus Aelita being sent plummeting to her almost doom...mere moments after he saw it in a vision.
  • You Are Grounded!: Because Milly loses her temper, Milly and Tamiya end up grounded from doing a newscast in the prom.
