Chaos erupts in the Vermillion Forbidden City as Zero takes Empress Tianzi hostage. As Todoh fends off Suzaku, Zero makes his escape back to his flying flagship, the Ikaruga, as Princes Schneizel and Odysseus retreat to safety. Xingke tries to pursue Zero, but he is captured and imprisoned by the High Eunuchs.

Zero explains his master plan with Tianzi: that he wishes for the United States of Japan to join forces with the Chinese Federation in a new union of sovereign nations to oppose Britannia. His attempts to explain this plan fly over her head, though.

After taking out an ambush of Chinese Federation troops, the Black Knights make their escape aboard the Ikaruga. Their escape is stopped, however, by a single Knightmare: in exchange for agreeing to rescue the Empress, the High Eunuchs released Xingke and allowed him to pilot a new prototype Knightmare Frame, the Shen Hu. Xingke uses the Shen Hu's deadly electric whips to destroy several Black Knight Knightmares.

Kallen engages the Shen Hu, which reveals itself to possess a powerful weapon, one that Rakshata built along with the Radiant Wave Surger against which it is an equal match: the Heavenly Particle Shocking Cannon. Before Kallen can land a finishing blow against the Shen Hu, the Guren runs out of power, and she finds herself captured by Xingke. With a large contingent of the Chinese Federation's forces approaching them, Lelouch becomes determined to fight through them and save Kallen, against Diethard's advice to leave her behind.

Zero and Xingke engage in a battle of wits and tactics, attempting to outflank one another. Xingke gains a decisive advantage when he has the battlefield flooded from a nearby lake, causing the battlefield to become muddy and bogging down the Black Knights. Zero is ultimately forced to retreat, and leave Kallen as the Chinese Federation's prisoner of war.

The Black Knights had set up base in the Mausoleum of the 88 Emperors, a sacred burial ground. As the Black Knights await reinforcements from India, the High Eunuchs betray Xingke, having chosen to side with Britannia. As the combined forces of the Chinese Federation and Britannia loom over the Black Knights, Zero prepares his trump card...

Meanwhile, back in Area 11, Lelouch informs the student council that Milly and Nina are safe while they watch the news about Zero's battles in China...
