Recap / Class S01E05 "Brave-ish Heart"

Go To

In the Underneath, April is still determined to hunt down and kill Corakinus. Ram tags along, trying to persuade her to think about whether there are any possibilities other then a frontal assault.

Back on Earth, Dorothea tries to persuade Quill to get Charlie to use the souls in the Cabinet to destroy the petals, which have now built up to the point of killing people. When Charlie, Dorothea, Quill, and Matteusz are in Charlie's room with the Cabinet, however, Quill tries to persuade Charlie to use it to destroy the Shadowkin in revenge, even though it will mean their deaths along with everyone on Earth thanks to the petals. Dorothea tries to force Charlie to destroy the petals by holding Matteusz at gunpoint, while Matteusz tries to persuade Charlie not to kill anyone.

Corakinus comes out of his palace to duel April, just as April's mother Jackie uses the part of the power that April gave her to open a portal to the Underneath. Huw, April's father, and Varun, Ram's father, go through to witness April fighting Corakinus. She manages to defeat him in a sword-fight, but the other three manage to persuade her not to kill him. Turns out, merely by vanquishing him, she has become the new King of the Shadowkin.

April, Ram, and their fathers return to Earth through the portal. Just as Charlie is about to activate the souls from the Cabinet, April realises that as King, she can order the Shadowkin to destroy the petals, which she does. Corakinus, confined in a dungeon, rips the linking device out of his chest, reducing the connection between him and April to its original state and removing her powers. April tells her father never to contact them again unless they contact him first.

The next day, at the school, Dorothea tells Quill that she is still willing to remove Quill's parasite if she wants it. Meanwhile, April discovers, to her happiness, that her mother is still healed despite the power loss.

Tropes that appear in the episode:

  • Aborted Declaration of Love: Parodied between Ram and April:
    "April, listen."
    "Don't say it."
    "Don't say what?"
"Don't say that you love me."
    "What? I wasn't. I've known you, like, a month."
"You were totally about to say it."
    "I wasn't."
"You were, because I was going to say that we've only known each other for, like, a month."
    "Well, I wasn't."
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Lampshaded. Tanya accuses April's mother Jackie of this when she doesn't believe that aliens are involved. As Tanya points out, April had just reached into her body to heal her spine and jumped into a portal to another planet in front of them. Jackie quickly starts believing them.
  • Celebrity Paradox: The Lord of the Rings is mentioned a few times. Seventh Doctor actor Sylvester McCoy plays Radagast the Brown in the movies of said franchise,.
  • Challenging the Chief: If the Shadow King loses in a one-on-one fight, their opponent becomes the new King. April uses to to become the new Shadow King after beating Corakinus.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The title refers to "Brave heart", the inspiring Catchphrase of the Fifth Doctor from Doctor Who.
    • Quill asks if Dorothea is from UNIT, again, a nod to Doctor Who.
  • De-power: Corakinus rips the device out of his chest after being imprisoned, causing April to lose her Shadow Kin powers.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: We see a few corpses mostly skeletonised by the petals.
  • Fire and Brimstone Hell: The Underneath.
  • Forever War: The Shadow Kin believe their existence is a mistake, so they make war on the entire universe.
  • Hive Mind: Dorothea mentions the Petals probably had only one soul between them, meaning Charlie would have only had to use one soul to destroy them.
  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: Ram, Varun and Huw trying to persuade April not to kill Corakinus, and Matteusz trying to persuade Charlie not to use the souls in the Cabinet to kill anyone.
  • Klingon Promotion: Averted. Though April defeats the Shadow King and thus takes his position, she doesn't kill him, which usually happens to a defeated Shadow King, sinve it would kill her too.
  • Lava Adds Awesome: The Underneath is "pure shadow", but there is fire and lava everywhere.
  • Nebulous Evil Organisation: The "governors" and Dorothea work for some kind of organisation that is smaller than UNIT, but has much less enthusiasm for freedom and democracy.
  • The Power of Love: By thinking of April, Jackie is able to link herself further to her, and when Huw reminds her of how April loves her, the connection is strengthened.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Quill tries to persuade Charlie to use the souls to destroy the Shadow Kin, even though this will wipe out any chance of their species being resurrected and leave them helpless to be eaten alive by the petals. Although she does point out that wiping out the Shadow Kin would save more species in the long run than wiping out the petals.
  • Set a Mook to Kill a Mook: April, after becoming the Shadow King, orders the Shadow Kin to destroy the Petals.
  • Shout-Out: Ram calls April "Frodo" and talks about "jumping into Mount Doom", referring to The Lord of the Rings.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: April uses the Shadow Kin to destroy the Petals.
  • Take That!: Ram refers to The Lord of the Rings as "an old film [his] dad likes".
  • We All Die Someday:
    Dorothea: We would all die.
    Quill: Everyone dies some day.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Dorothea threatens Matteusz with a gun to make Charlie use the Cabinet of Souls.
  • What Measure Is a Mook?: A lot is made of April not killing Corakinus, but nobody even brings up the Shadow Kin foot soldiers that she already killed.
