Recap / Centaurworld S1E6: Holes, Part 2

Go To

As Horse complains about her changed hair, the herd finds that the rainbow road leads into a deep hole. They jump down the hole to follow it and wake up in jail, where Glendale quickly goes native and a moletaur guard named Comfortable Doug informs them that they'll soon be brought to trial, presided by Judge Jacket. As they wait, Horse's tail spontaneously comes to life and starts telling jokes. Horse panics, while the centaurs celebrate her first spell. Doug returns and, while Glendale panics and tries to dig a hole to freedom, tells the herd to go down to the hole to the trial.

The trial is grossly unfair and explicitly aimed at finding them guilty. Horse's tail, which had been tied up with scrunchies, breaks free and starts singing and telling jokes. Horse is mortified, but the moletaurs find them hilarious. Horse decides to use this to get them free; her jokes are awful, but the moletaurs love them and find them not guilty. Judge Jacket gives them a piece of the key in reward, revealing that she's a shaman.

After the trial concludes, the herd returns to the surface and finds that Glendale has just dug her way free. To their horror, they realize that they completely forgot about her and decide to take this secret to the grave. As the herd moves on, Horse asks her tail if it thinks that Rider will recognize her after the changes she's gone through. Her tail simply replies that this is only the beginning before falling limp again.

This episode contains examples of:

  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Judge Jacket mentions that one of the many centaurs given a life sentences tripped and fell on their own birthday cake on the way to their cell, causing all the moletaurs to laugh at them.
  • Brick Joke: When the guard arrives to escort the herd to trial, Glendale panics and begins to dig at a wall with a spoon. She is entirely absent from the following scenes, but this is only brought up when, after the herd returns to the surface, she emerges from the ground after having finished digging her tunnel, and the herd is horrified to realize that they forgot about her.
  • Captivity Harmonica: While the herd is imprisoned, Glendale's song about all the things she's stolen begins with a harmonica riff, with Zulius being revealed as the culprit — playing harmonica notes on his comb.
  • Cutlery Escape Aid: While the others defend themselves in the trial, Glendale spends the second half of the episode painstakingly digging herself out of prison with a spoon.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: "Baby's First Spell" is a song that very unsubtly compares learning magic to puberty.
  • "I Am" Song: "Butt of the Joke" is a song by Horse's tail about how he loves being a comedian and in the spotlight.
  • Kangaroo Court: The moletaurs' court is very openly rigged — they make no bones about the fact that the entire point of the proceedings is to find the defendant guilty. They eventually find them not guilty on the basis of their being funny.
  • Longer-Than-Life Sentence: Using magic in the moletaurs' court is punishable with three consecutive life sentences.
  • Mole Men: The moletaurs have the lower bodies of moles and the upper bodies of sweaty, bald, eyeless humanoids — Judge Jacket is the only one who has hair, and she also has the nose of a star-nosed mole — and live in isolation underground.
  • Power Incontinence: Along with her transformed hair, Horse acquired magic as well, and unintentionally brings her tail to life and doesn't know how to stop it.
  • Nightmare Face: When Comfortable Doug suddenly shouts "tell it to the judge" his goofy-looking rounded teeth suddenly become fangs, he loses his accent, and his voice gains a distorted, echoic effect.
  • Riddle for the Ages: It is unknown how Zulius managed to acquire a fresh edible cake by trading with "Gary", the skeleton whose cell Ched shares, but that could just be Centaurworld's usual wackyness. However, Gary is a clearly human skeleton. This is never adressed, even by Horse who nonetheless likely saw Gary since she knew what he was.
  • Scary Teeth: All the moletaurs have sharp teeth, but they become especially sharp and scary-looking whenever any of them get angry.
  • Shout-Out: To Bojack Horseman, with a character played by Paul F Tompkins irritating a cynical horse.
  • Something We Forgot: The herd is mortified that they forgot about Glendale, and quickly agree to pretend otherwise.
  • Un-Installment: There is no "Holes: Part 1" for this episode to be a continuation to. At best, it may be a Call-Back to the previous episode's brief discussion of holes in caves.
