Recap / Castlevania (2017) S4E10 "It's Been a Strange Ride"

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Babies Ever After: For the three main protagonists. Sypha and Trevor resolve to raise their unborn child along with Alucard, Greta, and the village they are building around the Belmont hold.
  • Book Ends: The first time Trevor meets Sypha is when he held her in his arms. The last time we see them together in this series is with Sypha holding Trevor in her arms.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: While Death is very much, well, dead, Trevor took this trope quite literally, breaking his left arm in the fight with Death and his right being covered in scorch marks and discolorations as a result of using the God-killing knife.
  • Dénouement Episode: Much like the season 2 finale, the episode wraps up plotlines after the climactic battle in the previous episode.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Lenore has been spending her time since Carmilla's death drinking it away.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Death and every other malevolent force pulling the strings are now gone. Isaac has decided to rebuild Styria as a force for good in the world, Hector is retiring from his days of sorcery, Striga and Morana have fled to rebuild their own lives together and while Lenore is now dead, she had done it on her own terms. Alucard is helping Greta build a new village outside his castle for the survivors, with implications that his library and the Belmont hold will be used to educate future fighters against evil, and it is implied that the two of them are falling in love. Sypha is pregnant with Trevor's child and Trevor had just barely survived his battle with Death, the two of them deciding to stay with Alucard at the new village of Belmont and raise their child together. Instead of being driven mad in the body of the Rebis, Dracula and Lisa are now alive and well, Starting a New Life in England where they can live together in peace.
  • Extradimensional Emergency Exit: Saint Germain used the last of his strength to open the Infinite Corridor after Trevor struck the final blow on Death, dumping him on the banks of the Danube, still in Wallachia but hundreds of miles away. He clings to life over the two week ride to Castle Dracula without medical treatment.
  • Faking the Dead: Dracula and Lisa agree not to let Alucard know that they are no longer dead (or at least not right away), agreeing that their son should be allowed to live his own life for the time being.
  • Grand Finale: To the series, or at least Trevor and Sypha's part of it.
  • Heel Realization: Lenore always prided herself on being a "diplomat," and thus sought "strength." Lenore thought the strength and stability she sought was the same as what Carmilla wanted, which she calls the "vampire's virtue." However, through the events of Carmilla's downfall and Hector's words, Lenore recognizes that strength and power are two different things, that Carmilla's goals were about power, and also that as a vampire, Lenore herself wanted power and not strength, meaning that her understanding of what "vampire's virtue" is was a lie from the start. Recognizing her own failings is part of her choice to end her life.
  • Hell Has New Management: Discussed when Lisa notes that she assumed that Dracula would decide to conquer Hell after being killed, though instead he came looking for her.
  • I Die Free: Lenore steps out into the sunlight to die, having had a Heel Realization and not wanting to be Isaac's prisoner.
  • Murder-Suicide: Trevor explains that the weapon he used to kill Death was from a spell a madman made in an attempt at a murder-suicide pact with God Himself. Trevor does admit the pact was rather "one sided", though.
  • Sequel Hook: The series ends with villagers roaming Alucard's library and the Belmont Hold, implying that their knowledge both for living and for fighting monsters will live on through them and their descendants. Trevor survives his fight with Death and is having a child with Sypha, meaning that House Belmont is still alive and well. Dracula is alive and moves to London with Lisa, meaning this will not be the last anyone will see of him.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Sypha reveals to Alucard that she's pregnant with the posthumous child of Trevor. Subverted when it turns out that Trevor is still alive.
  • Suicide by Sunlight: Lenore — having gone past the Despair Event Horizon after losing her sisters and power — chooses death over eternity in a Gilded Cage. So after some parting words with Hector, she walks onto a balcony and calmly waits for the sun to rise, quickly incinerating when it does.
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: For most of the cast, at least, and in strong contrast to Season 3's Downer Ending:
    • Trevor and Sypha are happily in love with a baby on the way, with a place to both rebuild the Belmont family and retain Speaker knowledge in an effective way.
    • After a teased Start of Darkness in season 3, Alucard opens up more to human relationships, acting as a foster father to some orphaned children, and alludes to a possible romance with Greta.
    • Vlad and Lisa have been returned to life and plan to travel far away to live in peace and solitude.
    • Isaac has the foundations of a new, fairly large kingdom, where vampires and night creatures can serve in a sort of purgatory instead of being condemned to an eternal hell.
    • Hector is freed both from his servitude and being the target of revenge, and is free to write so that future generations can learn from their mistakes.
    • Lenore has some closure on life and gets to die on her own terms.
    • A previous episode established that separated from Styria, Striga and Morana are able to move on with their lives, safe in their love with each other, and potentially ruling and protecting a neighboring area whose mercenaries died in Styria.
  • Tears of Joy: Sypha cries some at the end, after Trevor returns alive.
  • Title Drop: Alucard says it when talking about how the villagers of Danesti are going to build a new town near Belmont Manor and Castlevania, and that he's happy.
    Trevor: You look weirdly happy.
Alucard: I...I weirdly am. It's been a strange ride. I'm happy it's over.

"I think we finally won."
