Recap / Carmen Sandiego S 4 E 07 The Viennese Waltz Caper

Go To

Shadowsan, Ivy, and Zack fly to Vienna to intercept V.I.L.E.'s latest heist, hoping it'll lead them to the missing Carmen.

Tropes:

  • Amnesiac Resonance: While there's no indication she met them at some point post-mind wipe, Carmen is able to recognize that Zack and Ivy are a threat to V.I.L.E. at a glance.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In addition to wiping her memories, Maelstrom and Bellum also removed Carmen's ability to feel empathetic towards anyone except her close allies (in this case, her fellow V.I.L.E. operatives).
  • Criminal Amnesiac: Dr. Bellum wipes Carmen's mind of anything past her time at V.I.L.E., and edits her memories of her escape so it seems like Shadowsan defected that day instead. The result: a version of Carmen who's now fully willing to work for V.I.L.E.
  • Dramatic Irony: Julia spots Carmen at the museum and assumes she's there to stop whatever V.I.L.E.'s planned, not knowing that they've wiped her memories to bring her to their side.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Downplayed; the only change made to Carmen's costume after her mind wipe is the replacement of her old communicator earrings with new, V.I.L.E.-brand ones, and a V.I.L.E.-themed glider instead of her red one.
  • Lack of Empathy: The brainwashed Carmen doesn't care if anyone gets injured by her crimes, and actively tries to kill Zack at one point. Ironically, this gives her fewer morals than her original villainous incarnation, who always took great care to make sure no one was hurt during her heists.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Gray is appalled when Zack nearly dies because of the evil Carmen, who pushed him off the ferris wheel thanks to his help, as he finally pulls a Heel–Face Turn for good.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • At one point, Agent Zari asks "Where on Earth are you, Carmen Sandiego?"
    • The violin piece being played is an adaptation of the theme to the same show, with Carmen even saying that “They are playing my song.”
      • Which doubles as a Genius Bonus due the fact that theme song uses the same melody as "Singt dem großen Bassa Lieder" which came from an opera written by Mozart.
    • In many other versions Carmen is the leader of V.I.L.E. She has finally ascended to a joint leadership position at the end of this episode.
