Recap / Card Captor Sakura Sakuras Rival Appears

Go To

A new transfer student comes to Sakura's class, a Grumpy Bear named Syaoran Li. Syaoran reveals to Sakura that he knows about the Clow Cards, and he wants her to hand them over. Sakura just wants to get on with her life, but she has to deal with Syaoran when a new card appears.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Sakura and Toya bicker, but Toya prepares himself to grapple with Syaoran for attacking his sister, and Sakura worries about what Syaoran will do to Toya.
  • Advertisement:
  • Big Eater: Yukito says that after he dreamed about having fish for breakfast, he had seven bowls of rice. Sakura stumbles while rollerblading after hearing this, and Toya laughs.
  • Big Brother Instinct: It's a bad idea to attack Sakura if Toya is nearby, as Syaoran finds out the hard way. While Toya doesn't lay a finger on him, he makes it clear to not hurt his sister.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Tomoyo found pink rubber, and she uses it to make Sakura's costume so that she won't get electrocuted. She has a matching bell for Kero.
  • Cutting the Knot: Syaoran tries to obtain the Cards Sakura caught, by demanding she hand them over and then wrestling with her to get them. Sakura fights back since she promised Kero to seal the cards, and Toya makes Syaoran back off.
  • Dramatic Thunder: The Thunder Card, of course.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Syaoran enters the class giving a Death Glare at Sakura and intimidating her. Then when talking to her in private he insults her by asking how a "child" could be chosen to Seal the cards.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Tomoyo, a Nice Girl, yells in alarm when she sees Syaoran wrestling with Sakura for the Clow Cards.
    • Kero reassures Sakura that she is the rightful owner of the Cards that she's sealed.
    • Sakura yells at Kero for biting Syaoran, even though the kid very much deserved it.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Syaoran is befuddled that Cerberus, one of the most powerful guardians, is a "stuffed animal".
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Toya likes to tease Sakura, but he won't tolerate anyone picking on his little sister.
  • Jerkass: Syaoran starts off as one, and he ends up winning no one in the class over with his sour attitude.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Syaoran spends the entire episode belittling everyone he talks to, including Sakura and Kero. Kero then bites him for calling him a "stuffed animal".
  • Mood Whiplash: Before Syaoran and Toya can fight, Yukito bursts into the scene, oblivious, and hands out buns to everyone. This causes Syaoran to blush and run off, much to everyone's befuddlement.

  • New Transfer Student: Syaoran Li is one, who transfers to Sakura's class for the purpose of "helping" to Seal the Clow Cards.
