Recap / Camp Camp S 1 E 8 Into Town

Go To

David goes into town to blow off some steam, and the kids follow him to see what makes him tick. Neil gets a job. Max fears for his life when he sees David outside of camp.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: The episode initially drops hints that David may be a serial killer outside of camp. It turns out at the end that David's idea of stress relief is to get away from the camp - and go camping.
  • Children Are Innocent: Max is far from innocent, but he's still too young to know what kind of an establishment Muffin Topz is. When the bouncer throws him and Nikki out, he looks more than a little shell-shocked.
Max: I... was not prepared for that.
    • When the bartender mentions that David "hit his Shirley Temple pretty hard," Max thinks that means David beat a woman.
  • Discriminate and Switch: When the bartender tells Max that he doesn't serve "your kind," Max leaps up on the bar and begins to berate him for racism. The bartender clarifies that he means kids, and Max calmly agrees and sits back down.
  • Foreshadowing: Nikki hates air conditioning and complains that she always "dries up" in cars. It turns out that too much time away from nature actually makes her physically ill.
  • Girliness Upgrade: The longer Nikki spends away from nature, the more feminine her appearance gets - and the sicker she becomes.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Neil repairs a HAM radio in seconds just to get a guy out of his face.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Much to Max's dismay, he spends the whole episode trying to discover David's weakness only to be forced to realize that David really is as nice as he seems.
  • The Teetotaler: Even outside of camp, David doesn't drink.
