"Consequences" is the 8th episode of Season 3, and the 55th overall. It originally aired November 8, 2006.

Synopsis:

One paintball player is found shot to death in a warehouse while his opponent has gone missing. The plot thickens when traces of cocaine from an old drug bust are found at the scene. Meanwhile, Stella thinks she's being followed on her day off, and Mac ends up meeting someone from Claire's past.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Alien Abduction: Inverted. The "alien" is the one who is abducted.
  • Bear Trap: The "alien" steps in a bear trap left by his abductor for that very purpose.
  • Broken Pedestal: The training officer of one of the team is revealed to have shot someone and to have removed the bullet in order to throw off suspicion from himself.
  • Caught in a Snare: The bear trap is left for the express purpose of catching an alien. The paintball player's foot gets caught in it and he can't get loose.
  • Dirty Cop: A cop shoots someone and removes the bullet but is caught later, leading to dire "consequences" in further episodes when perps he'd help put away are released due to his word no longer being considered reliable.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Mac says Claire had told him about her son, Reed, but that she'd given him up for adoption when he was born since she was so young then and had wanted him to have a better life than she could've given him.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: Slightly sideways example with Reed, who is technically Mac's stepson. Mac identifies himself to the boy, not the other way around.
  • Mistaken for Aliens: The injured missing man is kidnapped from the scene by a schizophrenic woman who believes him to be an alien, and that the green paint all over his gear is his blood.
  • Paintball Episode: The ep opens with a paintball battle between the two victims.
  • Seeking the Missing, Finding the Dead: When Reed asks Mac about his birth mother, Mac has the unenviable task of telling him that Claire had died on 9/11.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Sandwich: At his first get-to-know-you meeting with Mac, Reed has a soda in front of him. Halfway through their conversation, he pulls the paper off the straw and takes one sip. As he thanks Mac for it upon leaving later, the full glass is in plain view.
  • Tin Foil Hat: A variation. When Stella and Flack arrive to question the schizophrenic woman, she offers metal colanders to them so their thoughts won't be captured. They decline.
