"Open and Shut" is the 6th episode of Season 3, and the 53rd overall. It originally aired October 25, 2006.

Synopsis:

A concierge falls to her death in a hotel atrium during a swimsuit model's rooftop photo shoot. A woman claims to have shot a man in self-defense after he beat her husband to death with a hammer.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Cool Shades: Mac wears stylish shades with round, very dark lenses. Justified in that he's questioning a suspect as she's tanning in blazing sunlight on a rooftop.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The concierge lands on a spiked piece of artwork in the hotel lobby.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Mandi Foster and Tess Larson get scenes in bikinis.
  • Modeling is Glamorous: An extremely entitled model parading around in a string bikini during a rooftop pool-side photo shoot gets caught on film bullying a hotel concierge about her pillow not being fluffy enough, pitches a fit about not being in the mood to work and pouts off to her dressing room for a nap, and constantly bosses her personal assistant around. Before they're aware of her true personality, Adam gushes, "I *love* Mandy Foster!" and is excited to work on a case that involves her.
  • Spanner in the Works: Stella Lampshades that the perp in one case would never have guessed that the team would be right around the corner investigating the other case when the call comes in, preventing the disposal of all the evidence. A second spanner is that the intended scapegoat had arrived earlier than intended, forcing her to hide the aforementioned evidence.
  • The Un-Reveal: Once the therapist is unmasked as the killer, no motive is revealed, other than that she "had to live with" her husband.
