Recap / Burn Notice S 6 E 17 You Can Run

Go To

Each side takes a hostage as agent Riley finally catches up with Michael, but Sam may not make it out alive.

  • Armor-Piercing Question: As an example of how far off the rails Riley has gone, Bly reveals that Sugar was arrested for helping Michael. He has been unable to learn where Sugar's being detained or what's being done to him.
Bly: Now, you wanna see the same thing happen to Fiona, Sam, that Porter guy, or your mom?
  • Berserk Button: Riley overplays her hand by expressing certainty that Jesse's mother would want him to do anything to find the killer. Jesse is outraged that she would try to put words in his dead mother's mouth and rejects her offer on principle.
  • The Bus Came Back: John Campbell (Fi's boyfriend for part of Season 2) is who she calls to try to help Sam.
  • Cowboy Cop: Bly tells Mike that Riley has gone completely off the rails.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Dean is in on the pursuit, but he admits to Michael that he is disturbed by how far Riley is taking it and that it's so unlike past operations he did with her. He would prefer Michael surrender now for everyone's sake.
  • Family of Choice: Jesse says his mother always taught him to stand by family, which is why he won't sell out Michael and the others.
Riley: These people aren't your family, Jesse.
    Jesse: Yeah, they are.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: While the group attempts to finalize their escape plan at the dock, Jesse gets captured, while Sam is gravely wounded.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Riley has one of her people rough Jesse up (e.g. punches to the stomach, hit with a phonebook) so that she will look like far more reasonable with her simple questions. Jesse points out exactly what she's doing and doesn't take the bait.
  • Heroic Vow: Before passing out, Sam makes Michael promise to fix all this.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Bly concedes the deal he's offering isn't all roses for the group, as he can't even guarantee keeping the others out of jail. However, he points out that it's still preferable to an increasingly unhinged Riley catching up with them.
  • Loophole Abuse: Bly acknowledges how he isn't allowed to simply meet with a wanted fugitive the way he does, which is why he called the cops ahead of the meeting with Michael. As he says, them being in the same diner will just be chalked up to a fluke he can't be held responsible for.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: It's unlikely that Jesse would've taken Riley's offer, but he was clearly tempted. Her claiming to speak for his dead mother, though, prompts him to reject her offer and point out his mother always told him to stand by family. He's done listening to Riley at that point.
  • Parental Substitute: While talking to Dean, Michael points out it's well-known that Tom Card was basically like a father to him, so he wouldn't have pulled the trigger without a really good reason.
  • Please Wake Up: After Sam passes out, Michael tries to get him to wake up. The episode cuts to black amid Say My Name.
  • The Power of Friendship: Something both Jesse and Dean (the captured mook) have in common is the refusal to sell out a friend no matter what.
  • Pride: During their meeting, Bly warns Michael that Riley's image has been damaged in all of this and that she is not taking that well. Her interrogation of Jesse alone demonstrates how upset she is about this.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • On lookout, Jesse notices a container truck easily moving past the security checkpoint, only for said checkpoint to block the rest of traffic. It makes Jesse nervous, and Sam isn't any happier to hear it. It's soon shown to be full of Riley's well-armed agents.
    • There was a confidential informant in the investigation into the murder of Jesse's mother. To get Jesse to play ball, Riley claims to have obtained that information he's so badly wanted to see. Jesse is skeptical that she so easily got it so soon after detaining him, especially given how many requests he made for a decade. He is ultimately proven right to be suspicious. He is ultimately proven right, though still very disappointed.
  • Sadistic Choice: For Michael, taking Bly's deal or taking his chances on the run. Neither are good options for himself, but he's most concerned about what will happen to the others depending on what he chooses.
  • Save the Villain: The plan to free Jesse involves gassing the building with a particular type of sedative. Afterwards, Michael and Fiona have to give injections of the inverse to prevent any fatal reactions. Fi handles the various mooks, but she's content to leave Riley on the floor. Michael insists Riley get one.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Bly has been overseeing the investigation into Tom Card's death, saying he's found that Card's "white knight" image was undeserved.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In the last scene, Sam says he is sick of the way Michael keeps justifying bad actions and that it's time to make things right the right way.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Riley tries to get Jesse to turn by offering him information about his mother's murder. Jesse doesn't sell out his friends, but while being rescued, he goes for the file folder. Upon opening it, he sees the papers are blank.
    Jesse: Son of a bitch.
